DEVADAS KANAKALA

Devadas Kanakala was the senior most acting guru in AP. He started acting institute long back for which his wife Lakshmi has been the Principal.

The family glowed really well with big earnings till 80s and early 90s but from then onwards it became difficult for them to cope with the costs and maintenance standards. The earnings also turned limited. Rajiv Kanakala was also struggling those days without proper roles. He acted in many TV serials but they hardly brought money. Rajiv got married to Suma and that became a little boost for their family as her earnings were bit better.

Ever since the media channels mushroomed in big way, Suma turned very busy and she tuned herself with the pace and earning big. Rajiv Kanakala also got some break and now his call sheets are considerably expensive. Above all, Devadasu Kanakala was given the position of Director for an autonomous acting school with a payment of Rs 75,000 per month. He is also given a Car and accommodation. His past glory started again, say many. Good going Kanakala!

Telugu singing star, born in Guntur, AP. Original name: Venkatasubbaiah. Developed a characteristic singing style combining it with whistling (later even whistling classical Carnatic tunes, which gave him his popular name of 'Eelapata' Raghuramaiah). Joined Telugu theatre aged 8, playing Raghurama in the mythological play Bbakta Ramadas. In 1928 he acted the female role of Shakuntala in front of Rabindranath Tagore, who called him Andhra Nataka Kokila. With his second film, Kuchela, became known for acting Krishna, later adding the role of Narada to his repertoire.

TANGUTURI SURYA KUMARI

Born in Rajamundry, in south India, of Brahmin parents, Surya became a freedom fighter, or more accurately a freedom singer, while still a schoolgirl.

Sankarambadi Sundarachari's 'Maa Telugu Talliki Mallepoodanda' song is familiar to everyone. Tanguturi Suyakumari who sang it with great appeal in her mellifluous voice, has many records to her credit. She is the niece of 'Andhra Kesari' Tanguturi Prakasham Pantulu.

Accompanied by her uncle, Tangutoori Prakasam (known as the Lion for his defiance of British troops during the struggle for Indian independence), she sang patriotic songs which became more popular, and proved even more of a draw, than the speeches of politicians.

As a Child Artist:
She was a film star at the age of 12, when a special part was written into the film Vipranarayana (1937) to accommodate her singing talents. Record companies came forward to record her voice, and at a time when gramophones were not yet common, her songs could be heard everywhere. Patrons in restaurants and outdoor cafes would pay extra if their meal was accompanied by Surya's songs, and passing traffic would stop until a song had finished.

Maa Telugu Talliki….
Her presence was a major attraction at meetings of the Indian National Congress, and her recordings reached rural areas unvisited by politicians. Even today, her most famous song, Maa Telugu Thalli (in praise of her mother tongue), is sung at the start of social functions in her home state of Andhra.

Indian Cinema to Hollywood
Altogether, Surya appeared in some 25 Indian films in the 1940s and 1950s, singing and acting in a variety of languages, including Telugu, Sanskrit, Tamil, Gujurati, Hindi and English.

This 1952 'Miss Madras' had her film admirers too, for her films like 'Raithu Bidda' (1939), 'Bhagyalakshmi' (1943), 'Krishnaprema' (1943), 'Maradalu Pelli' (1952) and Hindi films 'Watan' (1954), 'Udan Khatola' (1955).

In the mid-1950s, she made her first visit to America, as a member of a delegation from the Indian film industry invited to Hollywood by the Motion Picture Association of America (though union regulations precluded her from film work there).

Learning western classics and research on Indian stories
In 1959, she went to New York to teach at Columbia University, and also to add to her skills by studying western classical and popular dance forms.
On her arrival, she appeared on television alongside the Indian ambassador and sang Indian songs. She then appeared as Queen Sudarshana in Rabindranath Tagore's The King Of The Dark Chamber (1961) and won the Off-Broadway Critics' Award for Best Actress. She had an acquaintance with the great Alfred Hitchcock. She also took the role of Princess Chitra in the dance production of Tagore's Chitra for CBS, and researched Indian stories for Alfred Hitchcock.

Journey to London
In 1965, Surya travelled to London, and her life changed again. Scheduled to play the Goddess Kali in Kindly Monkeys, a new play at the Arts Theatre, she decided at the end of the run to stay on and found India Performing Arts, a project to train performers and mount productions. Annual performances by Surya herself, her students and fellow artists followed at the Purcell Room, in the South Bank Centre, for the next 40 years.

She established 'India Performing Arts' at Kensington, England, to train the English in Indian performing arts.

Quennching the thirst of aestesism with Harold
From 1973, Surya was supported in her work by her husband, Harold Elvin, poet, painter and potter, reading his poetry and telling his stories as she sang and played the tanpura and sitar.

Something of the flavour of these gatherings may be gained from the programmes for two events in 1982, with schoolchildren appearing alongside Ben Kingsley in Homage To Mahatma Gandhi, and Larry Adler's harmonica improvisations (complemented by Surya's instrumental accompaniment) in An Indian Pageant.
Surya's political commitments were engrained in all her work, whether as chief singer at the Gandhi centenary commemoration at St Paul's cathedral in 1969, or with the Hordaland Teater of Bergen, for children in Norway, with whom she worked from 1991 to 1998. He predeceased her. Tanguturi Suryakumari, a singer, actor and dancer, passed away on April 25th, 2005.

SARADA, URVASI SARADA

Sharada(born June 12, 1945) is a three time national award winning South Indian actress. She originally hails from Andhra Pradesh. But has achieved success through Malayalam movies.Initially she has done many supporting roles in Telugu films, later on she moved to Malayalam film industry and gained success there. She is also known as Urvashi Sharada because earlier the National Film Award for Best Actress was officially designated as Urvshi Award.

Early life

Sharada was born as Saraswati Devi in Tenali, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her parents Venkateswar Rao and Sachyavathi Devi belonged to a family of agriculturalists. She has a brother, namely Mohan Rao. Sharada was sent to Madras in her childhood to live with her grandmother Kanakamma. Sharada describes her grandmother as a strict disciplinarian who in the later days wouldn’t even let the heroes touch her and allowed rehearsals only on Sundays. Sharada started to learn dance when she was six. She used to perform during Dasara and other temple festvals. It was because of her mother's desire that she learned dance. Her mother wanted her to become a big star in cine field. Though Sharada's father was not too interested in the idea, he didn't stop her daughter either.

Early career

When she grew up, she started in acting in theatre, under the supervision of her grandmother. In Indian theatre and cinema, the female lead stars used to leave the field as soon as they are married. So, most of the female lead stars were very young compared to the male leads. Sharada remembers in one of the plays she acted as the wife of a person 30 years older than her when she was just 13 Her debut in films was with a minor role in the Telugu film Kanya Sulkam. However, she returned to theatre after it and did a major role in the Telugu version of Ratha Kanneer, a Tamil drama. The play went to get staged over 100 times in Tamilnadu.

Film career

In 1959, she began her career as Sharada. The change in name was attributed to the presence of a few other actors in the industry with the name Saraswati. She came under contarct to L.V. Prasad, a Telugu producer. Though she didn't get to act in any of his films, she got her formal training in acting under him, including the Navarasa lessons. She largely attributes her performances and growth in the field to this training. Her first break came with the Akkineni Nageswara Rao starrer Mithramithrulu, which was a major hit. Noted for the role in the film, she got chances from Tamil and Malayalam films as well. The year 1965 changed her career as Sharada carved her niche for herself in the Malayalam film industry with her performances in Shakuntala, Murappennu, Kattu Thulasi and Inapravukal. After that, she focused in Malayalam films, acting only a few roles in other languages. Recognition came in 1967 in the form of a national honourary award for her performances in various films of 1966 including Iruttinte Athamavu. The award was the predecessor to the National Film Award for Best Actress, which was instituted in 1968. In 1969, she won her first National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in Thulabharam. She went on to win the award 2 more times, for Swayamvaram(1972, Malayalam) and Nimajjanam(1978, Telugu). She also won the Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actress 1 time.

Later she saw success in Telugu films in protagonist roles. She was so popular that she did lead roles in films starring most of the successful heroes of Telugu film industry. Post 1993, she became choosy and did only a few films. Her major films off late were Mazhathullikkilukkam(2002, Malayalam), Rappakal(2005, Malayalam) and Stalin (film)(2006, Telugu).She owns a chocolate factory named Lotus Chocolates. She was elected as Member of Parliament on Telugu Desam Party ticket from her native town of Tenali.

Bhakta potana was released at 1944.In that film lord rama will appear 2,3 times.The audience were mesmorised for lord rama.Why because lord srirama looking very beutiful.That rama character played by Chadalawada Narayana rao.He entered cine field in 1940 by jeevana jyothi movie.Narayana rao was a good personolity with natural hair,good looking eyes,long nose and loughing lips.In that days nagaiah,c.s.r,g.v.rao,umamaheswara rao were main heros.Those were not having charming personolity.So all people were admired by narayana rao charming personolity.He was a natural actor.In his acting there is a ease.In his career he played as a hero,villion nad character roles.He was personally very soft ,smooth talking,self respected person.He was very well educated.N.T.R first film was Mana desam.In that picture hero was narayana rao.In that time after shooting N.T.R was gone to set with genaral dress like pancha and lalchi.Narayana rao saw that dress and suggested to n.t.r 'you having good personality and good voice,maintain the same dress .it is very natural.In our pictures natural dress,natural action were very important.telugu industy wants persons like you.

In final days he faced so many financial problems.What ever it may be Narayana rao was the first glomorous hero for telugu industry.

KAIKALA SATYANARAYANA

Kaikala Satyanarayana was born on July 25, 1935 to Kaikala Laxmi Narayana couple at Kautaram village in Krishna district. Having completed his primary and intermediate education in Gudivada and Vijayawada, Satyanarayana graduated from Gudivada College. He married Nageswaramma on April 10, 1960 and is blessed with two daughters and two sons.

With his striking personality and sound voice, Satyanarayana landed in Madras for roles in movies. He was first noticed by DL Narayana. Narayana offered him a role in his film Sipayi Koothuru directed by Changayya in 1959. Though the film didnot do well at the boxoffice, he was noticed by one and all. It is quite interesting to note that one of the reasons why the makers noticed him is his resemblance to NTR. They found him as a prospective candidate to play dupe to NTR. And Satyanarayana aptly fitted that place. He played dupe to NTR in several movies. This is when NTR noticed him. NTR offered Satyanarayana a role in his film Apoorva Sahasra Siraccheda Chintamani in 1960. This film was directed by SD Lal. Satyanarayana played the role of a prince in that film.It was the vision of Vitalacharya to cast Satyanarayana as villain. This would change Satyanarayana's career for ever. Vitalacharya casted him in a negative role in his film Kanaka Durga Pooja Mahima. He fitted the role to the T and from then on, Satyanarayana grew to infinte bounds in establishing himself in the villain role.

While carving career as villain, Satyanarayana also did character roles in parallel. This eleveated him as an actor. Telugu industry is blessed to have an actor as versatile as Satyanarayana. There is not one role which is not done by this actor. Whatever role he entered into, he just lived in it. As NTR is for Lord Rama, Krishna etc, Satyanarayana is for Yama. He did Yama roles in Yamagola and Yamaleela.Satyanarayana who have been contributing to Telugu movies for over 4 decades, have acted in 777 movies. He has portrayed a variety of roles like mythological, villain, comedy, soft roles etc in his very special way. Satyanarayana is the king of all nine Rasas and hence the title NAVA RASA NATANAA SARVABHOUMA has been synonymous with his name.

Satyanarayana established Rama films production banner and made films such as Kodama Simham, Bangaru Kutumbam, Muddula Mogudu. In 1996, he stepped into politics by winning Lok Sabha elections from Machilipatnam constituency.Awards and recognitions
