Mumaith Khan an Indian film actress known for her item numbers. She has acted in nearly 40 movies in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada Languages.

Mumaith's family hailed from Pakistan but moved to India where they settled in the outskirts of Mumbai. Her father is an Indian (Tamil Nadu) and her mother is a Pakistani. She has four sisters and to support her family, she joined a small dance troop for Rupees 1500/- per month. Her sister Zobyn Khan also entered the film industry and has done some cameo appearances in Telugu films

After that, she became very busy in Bollywood as well as Tollywood and lately Kollywood. She gained more popularity with the item song in telugu film Pokiri (2006 film). In the Tamil film Pokkiri which was the remake of telugu film of the same name, also she danced in an item song. In Dr. Rajasekhar's film Evadaithe Nakenti, she played a police officer's role named F.Myssama. She has acted as heroine in the film ‘Bhookailas’ with Venu Madhav as the hero. Generally people tend to misunderstand Yana as a person of East Indian origin - she is actually European, a citizen of the Czech Republic.

A Taurus, Yana was born on April 23rd, 1979 in Brno. She has a natural beauty, enhanced by peaches and cream complexion, drop-dead gorgeous looks, a stunning figure, and a statuesque height of 5' 8" - ingredients that are guaranteed to sweep men completely off their feet.

She is the TV Anchor of a musical countdown show on Zoom TV, and was named as the Lakme new face of the year, replacing model-actress, Lisa Ray. She has signed up with Indiagames and will be featured in their future ventures, which will include games, puzzles, etc..

EV SAROJA

Starting her film career acting as M.G. Ramachandran's sister in the film `En Thangai' in 1951, she made her mark in films such as `Gulebagavali', `Veera Thirumugan' and `Madurai Veeran'. She acted in 40 films and danced for numbers in nearly 100 Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi movies and one Sinhala movie.
E.V.Saroja, the dancing star of Tamil cinema passed away recently. A dedicated dancer and actor, attractive and shapely she worked hard on her scenes. She was a charming presence in many successful Tamil movies during the Fifties and Sixties. She alsoplayed strong, supporting roles in Tamil and Telugu hits. She made waves with her first acting role (as the kid sister) in `En Thangai' (1952).It was a mega hit and launched her on the path to stardom.
`En Thangai,' a play written by ' En Thangai' Natarajan, was a hit in the early 1950s in which the lead was played by the then struggling actor Sivaji Ganesan, while the screen role was done by M.G.Ramachandran!
Not many are aware that MGR was not the first choice for playing the hero. The hero was the well-known off-screen playback singer Tiruchi Loganathan. For some reasons Loganathan was replaced by MGR.
Attempts were made to rope in Sivaji Ganesan to repeat the stage role but by that time he was already cast in his debut movie, `Parasakthi' (1952), which became a smash hit.
Both had similar story lines built around a brother's love for his unhappy sister.
As the girl blinded by lightning, young Saroja displayed impressive histrionics in her debut film and MGR who had made a name for his non-action role in `Andamaan Kaithi' proved that he was a good actor.

Saroja's performance paved the way for the film to be re-made in Telugu, Hindi, and Oriya.

WITH LEADING HEROES: Saroja with MGR
Saroja hailed from Enkann, a village in Thanjavur district, well known for its attractive women belonging to the traditional community of temple dancers. With her good looks and figure and the family connections she moved to Madras and underwent rigorous training in dance under the nattuvangam maestro and icon Vazhuvur B. Ramaiah Pillai.
The success of `En Thangai' brought Saroja many meaty roles in Tamil movies. Some of her famed movies of that period include `Gulebagavali' (1955), `Pennarasi' (1955), `Amara Deepam' (1956), `Paasavalai' (1956), `Madurai Veeran' (1956), `Karpukkarasi' (1957), `Rambayin Kaathal' (1956), `Enga Veettu Mahalakshmi' (1957), `Thanga Padhumai' (1959) and `Veera Thirumagan' (1962, the impressive directorial debut of the noted multi-lingual filmmaker A.C.Thirulokchandar). .
In these movies she acted with top stars such as MGR, Sivaji Ganesan and Gemini Ganesh.
Her success in Tamil films took her to Telugu cinema and she played interesting roles in movies such as `Iddharu Mithrulu' (A. Nageswara Rao was the hero).

As she did not know Telugu her lines were phonetically written in Tamil and she was actively guided by the celebrated filmmaker K. Viswanath who was then an assistant under famed Telugu director Adurthi Subba Rao. Her role attracted much attention.
Choreographer too
Besides acting, she choreographed dances for a couple of Telugu films and danced in several movies.
`Neelamalai Thirudan' (1957), an action movie produced by Chinnappa Thevar in which Ranjan played the lead role was dubbed in Hindi as `Matwala.' She turned producer during the 1960s in association with her brother E.V.Rajan and established EVR Pictures and produced films like `Koduthuvaitha Deivam' (MGR as hero) and `Thanga Surangam' (Sivaji Ganesan played the lead).

In many movies she was ably directed by the noted filmmaker Ramanna whom she married. The couple had two daughters.

SHOBANA

S hobana Chandrakumar Pillai (born March 21, 1966) is an exponent of the Bharatanatyam dance and a leading actress of South Indian motion pictures. She was born into a Malayalam speaking family from Kerala, India. Shobana is the niece of the Travancore sisters Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini, all of whom, who were renowned for their skill in classical Indian dance. She has acted in over 150 movies in 5 language.

Shobana acted for the first time in a leading role in the Malayalam motion picture "April 18" in 1984, directed by Balachandra Menon. She also acted alongside the Malayalam actor Mammootty in the film Kanamarayathu (1984). Shobana won her first National Award from the government of India, for best performance as an actress in 1994. She was awarded for her stunning performance in Fazil's movie Manichitrathazhu, starring Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi. She bagged a second National award for best actress in the year 2002 for her role in an English language film Mitr: My Friend, directed by Revathi.

Shobhana is an equally accomplished dancer of Bharatanatyam. She did her dance training at the Chidambaram academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Her gurus included legendary Bharatanatyam dancers Chitra Visweswaran and Padma Subramaniam. Shobhana is famed for her Abhinaya, a pivotal element in Bharatanatyam. She performed in Kuala Lumpur before the King and Queen of Malaysia. Shobhana's skilled execution of dance movements and her extraordinary beauty has led many people to consider her as the most beautiful South Indian actress from the 1980s through the 1990s. She is often equaled to the curvaceous beauty of Indian sculptures. Shobhana has founded a school for classical Bharatanatyam dance in Chennai. She was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai.

MANJU BHARGAVI

Manju Bhargavi gave her first Kuchipudi performance at the age of five, training under Guru Vempatti Chinna Satyam, imbibing and perfecting difficult and intricate features of Kuchipudi. Forming her own troupe in 1978, she has given over 2000 performances around the world, in Canada, USA, Malaysia, Kenya, etc., including on national television. Internationally famous musical film 'Shankarabharanam' is a feather in her cap. She is the Chairperson of Kuchipudi Syllabus Committee of Dance exams in Karnataka. She also runs a dance school in Bangalore with about 40 students. She has conducted two Dance Festivals and is working to start a Kuchipudi Research Centre in Bangalore. Vijayalakshmi acted with the leading actors of the day, including MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, N.T.R,A.N.R,Prem Nazir, Jaishankar and Muthuraman. She acted with Jaishankar in many films. According to her, Nagesh is the best dancer the industry has produced, and she had the opportunity to dance with him in ‘Kaakkum Karangal’. L. Vijayalakshmi now lives with her husband and son in the United States.
For her performance, Viji, as the leading lady of yesteryear is popularly known, was hailed as the dancing genius. The heroine of more than 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi is today a merry-tempered chartered accountant working as Budgeting Officer of Virginia Polytechnic University in the United States. Dance has been a passion for L. Vijayalakshmi. And, that was why her family shifted from Pune to Chennai in search of a Bharathanatyam guru for her. She was a quick learner and acclaimed dancer Kumari Kamala, who was her inspiration, presided over her ‘arangetram’.
Critics and magazines had then praised her as a new find - a combination of Kamala and Vyjayanthimala. She used dance as a ladder to films, fame and fortune.

Film directors and producers took a fancy to her dancing skills; they sensed that a dance sequence by Viji in their film could be useful. The first offer was a Telugu movie. It was a dream come true for her. Telugu industry was fond of classical dance, and almost all films in Telugu opted for Viji’s dance sequence.

“It was then that Tamil industry opened its doors for me,” says Viji. ‘Bhavani’ was my first Tamil film. Modern Theatres’ ‘Edhirigal Jakkirathai’, ‘Iru Vallavargal’, ‘Vallavan Oruvan’, ‘Kaakkum Karangal’, ‘Ayirathil Oruvan’; Sridhar’s ‘Sumai Thangi’ and ‘Panchavarnakili’ made me a big star.”

“Jayakanthan’s ‘Pathai Theriyudhu Paar’ was produced by Nimai Ghosh in Hindi, and I acted with Meenakumari. Then, I acted with Mehmood in ‘Shabnam’, which gave me recognition in the Hindi belt. And, then I turned to Malayalam. I acted with Prem Nazir in three movies, including ‘Laila Majnu’.

“‘Ooti Varia Uravu’ was my last film [in the late 1960s]. It was during this film that my brother’s friend, Suraj Kumar De Datta, an agricultural scientist working in the Philippines, saw my photograph and fell in love with me. He proposed to me on the sets.”
Tough decision

With a prosperous film career ahead of her, it was not easy to take a decision. But, her parents helped her make the choice by highlighting the significance of getting married at the right time.

After ‘Ooti Varai Uravu’ she bid adieu to the film industry.

A pure vegetarian, Viji found it difficult to take a bite of the fish she was offered as part of the Bengali marriage ritual. In 1969, she settled down in Manila, and with nothing else to do took up higher studies. Agriculture was her chosen subject.

In 1977, when the then Prime Minister, Morarji Desai, visited Manila, the Indian Embassy there asked her to give a dance performance at a function organised in his honour. “Morarji ‘bhai’ called my husband lucky when he saw my Bharatanatyam performance,” Viji said. “I shifted to the U.S. in 1991 and studied CPA (Chartered Public Audit) and got a job as Budgeting Officer in Virginia Polytechnic University.”

JAYAMALINI

Jayamalini is a famous south Indian film actress , who is famous for her vamp roles and Item Number Songs. She acted in more than 500 Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi movies. She had a dance number in Shalimar (film), (1978) starring Rex Harrison, Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman, which were in both English and Hindi versions. Her sister Jyothi Lakshmi was also a cabaret dancer in films. After she retired from films, she married a police inspector and is settled in Chennai with her children.. Although, her teenage daughter is taking dance classes, she has decided that she won't let her daughter enter films

HEMA MALINI

Hema Malini, (born October 16 1948 in Ammankudi, Tamil Nadu, India) is an Indian actress and Bharatanatyam dancer, who starred in several successful Bollywood films in the 1970s, most notably the extremely successful Sholay. She is remembered as Bollywood's one and only Dream Girl. She is a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper House of India's parliament.

Career

Hema Malini was educated at Andhra Mahila Sabha, Chennai. She acted in a short episode as dancer in Pandava Vanavasam, a 1961 Telugu film. Hema first tried to enter films in 1964, but was rejected; Tamil director Sridhar said she had no star appeal. She persisted and found her niche in Bollywood. She debuted in a 1968 film Sapnon Ka Saudagar ("The Dreamseller), playing a young teen opposite the ageing superstar Raj Kapoor. With Dev Anand in Johnny Mera Naam (1970), Hema became a top star and double-role with Sanjeev Kumar and Dharmendra in Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) she was the top female star in Bollywood and became one of the reigning divas of the Bollywood film industry. Her fans called her The Dream Girl of Bollywood (an allusion to her first film, and one of her big hits).

She starred in many movies throughout the 1970s and 1980s and is perhaps best remembered for her glamour, style, and accomplished classical dancing. She formed a hit pair with Dharmendra and the duo performed a number of hit movies. She also achieved some strong dramatic or comic moments in films like Trishul, Joshila, Lal Patthar, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Meera and Satte Pe Satta.

After having a back seat from films for a number of years in the 1990s and early 2000s, she has recently made a comeback of sorts. She co-starred with Amitabh Bachchan after two decades since they last appeared together in the successful film Baghban (2003), and played a cameo role (also opposite Bachchan) in the 2004 blockbuster Veer-Zaara. In both films, she played a beautiful, self-possessed, middle-aged married woman rather than the ingenue role of her earlier career.

She tried her hand at directing and made the 1992 film Dil Aashna Hai which featured an all-star cast including Shahrukh Khan and the late Divya Bharti.

She also directed and starred in the TV Serial Noopur, in which she was depicted as a Bharatanatyam dancer going to America.

Personal life

Hema Malini is a dedicated Bharatnatyam artiste, a classical dance of India. Her two daughters have trained in the related Odissi school of dance, and the three have performed together at several charity dance concerts.

Top Bollywood stars like Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra proposed to her, but she married Dharmendra and they have two children:Ahana Deol and Esha Deol (born 1982), who is a successful Bollywood actress as well.

In 2005, on the TV show Koffee with Karan, she said that she taught her daughters Tamil very well, but had to hire a tutor to help her daughter Esha Deol learn Punjabi for a film. Apparently, Esha's father Dharmendra, whose mother tongue is Punjabi, converses with Hema and his daughters only in Hindi and English.

She is the daughter of Shri V.S.R. Chakravarthy and Shrimati Jaya Chakravarthy who was a film producer. Shrimati Jaya Chakravarthy passed away on June 11th, 2004 due to gangrene on her leg.

Hema Malini and her husband have been involved in politics, as members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, with the support of the BJP. In February 2004, she joined the party officially. With her film career less hectic, she has been an active member of the party, attending party meetings and rallies and campaigning for the party through various elections.

She has said in interviews that she would never wear revealing outfits in movies, and has been true to her words till date. It is said that after she had shot for a swimsuit scene in a movie early in her career, her mother was so upset that she promised never to repeat it. She exposed her navel in a low-waist saree for the first time only in 2006, after 30 years of her acting career.
