ACHARYA ATHREYA |
Date of Birth:
7 May 1921, Sullurupeta, Andhra Pradesh,
Date of Death:
9 September 1989, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh,
'Manasunna manishiki sukhamu ledanthe' - a very simple phrase, yet undisputed fact. Inner feelings of an anguished human in a song have been so gorgeously penned by none other than Acharya Athreya garu. Popularly called as 'Manasu Kavi' by all his fans, Atreya was an adept in conveying intense human emotions in simple idiom.
Kilambi Venkata Narasimhacharyulu aka Atreya was born on 7 May 1921, in SulluruPeta. He was one of the proud Indians to be arrested for participating in Quit India Movement by the British. His passion towards telugu literature opened golden gate for him in 1951 when he wrote story, dialogues and lyrics for the movie 'Deeksha'. His debut song was 'poraa baaboo po! poyi choodu ee lokam pokada' sung by M.S.Rama Rao.
Most of his lyrics focused on subtle issues like love and dejection. Being an exemplary lyricist, he articulated tears of human agony as 'Gunde mantalaaripe channeellu kanneellu' in 'Padutha teeyaga challaga'; related the speech of heart as 'Manasu moogade kaani basunnadi daaniki' in 'Mudda banthi poovulo'(Mooga Manasulu), in a simple, but extraordinary style. His 'Mouname nee bhasha o mooga manasa'(Guppedu manasu) rendered the in-depth connotation regarding the nature of individual heart. 'Manasu moogadi, maatalu raanidi, mamatha okate adi nerchinadi' in 'E teega poovuno'(Maro Charithra) once again expresses the trait of human soul in Atreya's classic style. He was excellent in depicting the inner feelings of a distressed mind or the irresistible love of a lonesome heart. 'Manasu gathi inthe'(Prem Nagar), 'Ekkada vunna emaina'(Murali Krishna), 'O hrudayam leni priyuraala'(Kanne Manasulu), 'Andamaina jeevithamu addhaala soudhamu' (Vichitra Bandham) are a few examples of Atreya's mark.
'Raathi sthambhalake chethanathvamu kaligi sarigama padanisa padamule paadaga' in 'Aho Andhrabhoja! Sree Krishna Deva Raaya' from Manchi Manasulu was a paradigm for his outstanding articulation. 'Theta theta telugulaa tellavaari velugulaa'(Prema Nagar),'Ee pagalu reyiga pandu vennelaga maarinademi cheli' (Sirisampadalu), 'Neevu leka veena palukalenannadi', 'Paadamani nannadaga valena' (Dr.Chakravarthy) are a few of several other classic compositions from Atreya.
His devotional songs for the film 'Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam' - 'Sesha saila vasa Sri Venkatesa', 'Ennallani na kannulu kaayaga eduru chootura gopala' , 'vegaraara prabho, paahi hare' depict the other side of 'Manasu Kavi'.
'Chitapata chinukulu paduthuvunte'(Atma Balam), the first super hit rain song in the telugu film history was the downpour from Atreya's pen. It was followed by another rain song 'Chitaa pataa chinukulatho, kurisindi vaana, merisindi jaana'(Akka Chellellu). Atreya wrote a different rain song 'Swathi muthyapu jallulalo' for the film 'Prema Yuddham' in 1989, during his final stages of life. His dialogues and songs for the films 'Abhinandana' and 'Prema' were applauded by one and all.
'Pacha gaddi koseti paduchu pilla', 'Ettago unnadi olammi' from Dasara Bullodu,'Chengaavi rangu cheera kattukunna chinnadi' from 'Bangaru Babu', 'Ekkadiki pothavu chinnavaada' from 'Atma Balam' are Atreya's punching mass lyrics that are amazingly popular among all sections even today.
His dialogues for many films like Moogamanasulu, Mangalya balam, Velugu Needalu, Dr.Chakravarthy, Murali Krishna, Pelli Kanuka, Jaya Bheri are distinctive in the history of the telugu films. Predominantly, heart touching dialogues in Moogamanasulu, Velugu Needalu and classic dialogues in JayaBheri turned each of those movies a masterpiece.
Besides being a lyricist, story and dialogue writer, Atreya also produced & directed 'Vaagdaanam' and acted in two films, 'Aadarsam' and 'Kodenagu'.
Acharya Atreya passed away on 9 Sep, 1989 leaving behind his great writings for all of us to relish. We can still hear the heart beat of 'Manasu Kavi' in his everlasting writings. 'Poinollu andaru manchollu, unnollu poinolla theepi guruthulu'.

D YOGANAND (DIRECTOR) |
Date of Birth:
16 April 1922, Madras, Tamil Nadu, India
Date of Death:
23 November 2006, (heart attack)
Yoganand, the prolific, bilingual filmmaker who was most active from the 1950s to 1970s, passed away recently at his residence in Chennai. He was 85.
Tall, slim and handsome, he was a popular figure in the movie world of old Madras and much respected for his technical expertise.
He also had an excellent track record in Telugu and Tamil cinema.
He had the unique distinction of directing all the top stars of his time, both in Telugu and Tamil such as Sivaji Ganesan, M.G.Ramachandran, Gemini Ganesan, S.S. Rajendran, K. Balajee, N.T.Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Relangi, P. Bhanumathi, Savithri, Padmini, Vyjayanthimala, Jayalalithaa, Pandari Bai, B. Saroja Devi and Devika.
Background
D. Yoganand was born in 1922 into an affluent family in Andhra and was later given for adoption to a successful businessman dealing in photographic materials and who had his own studio.
This event in his life drew him to the art of photography and he learnt the tricks of the trade of still photography. Not surprisingly he felt drawn to cinema.
However, the call of the Indian Freedom Movement proved more powerful. He participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 and came close to great Congress leaders like Rajaji, Tanguturi Prakasam and Bulusu Sambamurthi.
Inspired by the life of great Indian revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh, he actively took part in cutting the wires of the electric trains plying between the Madras Beach and Tambaram stations.
Returns to old love
Realising that politics could not be his future, he went back to his old love photography and the movies.
He joined the technical unit of the celebrated filmmaker Gudavalli Ramabramham (`Mala Pilla,' and `Raithu Bidda' both cult movies of Telugu cinema), learnt film editing and worked as an assistant editor in Ramabramham's hit movie `Maya Lokam' (1945).
Later he joined the well-known cinematographer M. A. Rehman and worked as his assistant in many films.
He became friendly with all the prominent men of the Madras movie world of that era and got the break to direct the bi-lingual film,
`Marumagal/Ammalakkalu'(1953), for the dynamic, multilingual producer S.M.Letchumanan Chettiar (better known as `Lena Chettiar').
In a bold move, he cast N.T.Rama Rao and Padmini, who were making their way up in the film world.
This film took a good look at middle class family life at many levels.
In it, Yoganand created two mischief mongering female characters, who burned coals on dried cow-dung flat cakes as a symbol of setting fire to the happy families. An innovative and classic touch.
The metaphor made an impact and marked out Yoganand as a director certain to go places, and he did!
Both the versions were hits and some of the songs in the Telugu version became popular.
Rama Rao boldly engaged Yoganand to make his socially-relevant and meaningful Telugu movie, `Thodu Dhongalu' (1954), which had a strong Leftist tint in its thematic content and presentation.
That was the period when many young, idealistic filmmakers, who believed in Leftist philosophy had come into Telugu cinema and achieved success, such as L.V.Prasad, Tathineni Prakasha Rao, and Yoganand.
He became the in-house filmmaker for Lena Chettiar and his famed Krishna Pictures and made many box-office successes as well as the iconic film, `Madurai Veeran' (1956). The film sowed the seeds for MGR to be projected as more than a mere good-looking hero.
Some of Yoganand's memorable movies are `Kaveri' (1955, Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini), `Anbu Engey,' (Pandari Bai, S. S. Rajendran, K. Balajee, and Devika in a minor role), `Engal Selvi' (1960. A. Nageswara Rao and Anjali Devi) and `Parthibhan Kanavu' (1960, Gemini Ganesan, Vyjayanthimala, and B. Saroja Devi).
When L.V. Prasad planned to remake in Telugu the successful Tamil film `Ethirpaaraathathu,' he chose Yoganand to direct it.
`Ilavelpu,' a big hit, was remade in Hindi as `Sharada' (with Meena Kumari and Raj Kapoor) by Prasad.
Telugu films
Some of Yoganand's mention-worthy Telugu movies include `Ammalakkalu' (1954), `Thodu Dhongalu' (1955), `Jayasimha' (1956, the debut of Waheeda Rehman),`Pelli Sandhadi' (1960), `Vummadi Kutumbham' (1968), `Mooga Nomu' (1970) and `Vemulavada Bheemakavi' (1976).
A serious filmmaker, he worked hard on the screenplay in association with his writers and honed it to perfection before finalising the cast and planning the production.
With changing trends in Tamil and Telugu cinema, he found that it was no longer possible to work in his idealistic atmosphere and slowly moved away after his last movie, `Charithra Nayakan' (1984).
He leaves behind a large circle of friends, like this writer, not only in the world of movies but also in Telugu literature and politics and everyone will miss him.

WAHEEDA RAHMAN |
Waheeda Rehman (born May 14, 1936) is a famous Indian actress whose prime was in the late-1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. She has an alternated date of birth of February 3, 1936, and stands 5'1" tall.
Waheeda Rehman was born into a traditional Muslim family in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh in 1936. Her father, a DM (District Magistrate), was posted all over the South. She had dreamt of becoming a doctor, but destiny willed otherwise and she could not undergo proper schooling, due to some infection in her lungs. She was trained in Bharatnatyam and, prodded by her helpful parents, hit the silver screen with the Telugu film Jaisimha (1955), followed by Rojulu Maraayi (1955). She lost her father at the age of twelve.
She was spotted by Guru Dutt in a song in a later film and was brought to Bombay and cast as a vamp in his production C.I.D. (1956), directed by Raj Khosla. A few years after joining Hindi film industry, she lost her mother. After the success of C.I.D., she was given a leading role in Pyaasa (1957). It was at this point that she got involved in an unsuccessful love affair with director Guru Dutt. Their next venture together, Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), depicted the story of a successful director's fall from grace after he falls for his leading lady, and foreshadowed events in Guru Dutt's own life as well. Guru Dutt's marital status and her success in films outside his tore them apart personally and professionally, although they continued to work together in 1960's Chaudhvin Ka Chand. She completed Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) under some strain. They broke away from each other after the film's indifferent reception at the Berlin Film Festival in 1963. Guru Dutt committed suicide in 1964.
Waheeda Rehman was cast as "Gulabi" in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film 'Abhijan' in 1962, which she obliged canceling her usual schedules in Bombay.
Her career continued throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her roles in Guide (1965) and Neel Kamal (1968), but despite good roles in subsequent films some of the films failed at the box office. At around this time, Kamaljit Singh (who starred opposite her in Shagun (1964)) proposed marriage. She accepted the proposal and they were married on April 27, 1974. After her marriage, she shifted to a farmhouse in Bangalore and took to farming. She bore two children named Sohail and Kashvi. After her appearance in Lamhe (1991) she retired from the film industry. On November 21, 2000 her husband died following a prolonged illness she moved back to her sea-facing bungalow in Bandra, Bombay where she lives currently.
In recent years she made a comeback to films with Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Water (2005) and Rang De Basanti (2006) which were all critically acclaimed.
In October of 2004, a Waheeda Rehman film retrospective was held at the Seattle Art Museum and the University of Washington where Waheeda participated in spirited panel and audience discussions on her most memorable films, Pyaasa, Teesri Kasam and Guide. She was and still is a big Diwani Hundi fan.

L VIJAYA LAKSHMI |
Vijayalakshmi acted with the leading actors of the day, including MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, N.T.R,A.N.R,Prem Nazir, Jaishankar and Muthuraman. She acted with Jaishankar in many films. According to her, Nagesh is the best dancer the industry has produced, and she had the opportunity to dance with him in ‘Kaakkum Karangal’. L. Vijayalakshmi now lives with her husband and son in the United States.
For her performance, Viji, as the leading lady of yesteryear is popularly known, was hailed as the dancing genius. The heroine of more than 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi is today a merry-tempered chartered accountant working as Budgeting Officer of Virginia Polytechnic University in the United States. Dance has been a passion for L. Vijayalakshmi. And, that was why her family shifted from Pune to Chennai in search of a Bharathanatyam guru for her. She was a quick learner and acclaimed dancer Kumari Kamala, who was her inspiration, presided over her ‘arangetram’.
Critics and magazines had then praised her as a new find - a combination of Kamala and Vyjayanthimala. She used dance as a ladder to films, fame and fortune.
Film directors and producers took a fancy to her dancing skills; they sensed that a dance sequence by Viji in their film could be useful. The first offer was a Telugu movie. It was a dream come true for her. Telugu industry was fond of classical dance, and almost all films in Telugu opted for Viji’s dance sequence.
“It was then that Tamil industry opened its doors for me,” says Viji. ‘Bhavani’ was my first Tamil film. Modern Theatres’ ‘Edhirigal Jakkirathai’, ‘Iru Vallavargal’, ‘Vallavan Oruvan’, ‘Kaakkum Karangal’, ‘Ayirathil Oruvan’; Sridhar’s ‘Sumai Thangi’ and ‘Panchavarnakili’ made me a big star.”
“Jayakanthan’s ‘Pathai Theriyudhu Paar’ was produced by Nimai Ghosh in Hindi, and I acted with Meenakumari. Then, I acted with Mehmood in ‘Shabnam’, which gave me recognition in the Hindi belt. And, then I turned to Malayalam. I acted with Prem Nazir in three movies, including ‘Laila Majnu’.
“‘Ooti Varia Uravu’ was my last film [in the late 1960s]. It was during this film that my brother’s friend, Suraj Kumar De Datta, an agricultural scientist working in the Philippines, saw my photograph and fell in love with me. He proposed to me on the sets.”
Tough decision
With a prosperous film career ahead of her, it was not easy to take a decision. But, her parents helped her make the choice by highlighting the significance of getting married at the right time.
After ‘Ooti Varai Uravu’ she bid adieu to the film industry.
A pure vegetarian, Viji found it difficult to take a bite of the fish she was offered as part of the Bengali marriage ritual. In 1969, she settled down in Manila, and with nothing else to do took up higher studies. Agriculture was her chosen subject.
In 1977, when the then Prime Minister, Morarji Desai, visited Manila, the Indian Embassy there asked her to give a dance performance at a function organised in his honour. “Morarji ‘bhai’ called my husband lucky when he saw my Bharatanatyam performance,” Viji said. “I shifted to the U.S. in 1991 and studied CPA (Chartered Public Audit) and got a job as Budgeting Officer in Virginia Polytechnic University.”
