Gharana Mogudu (1992) Movie Profile and Trivia

Devi Film Productions' Gharana Mogudu, released on 9th April, 1992, was the first Telugu film to collect a distributors' share of Rs. 10 crore. It was the third straight hit for the combination of K. Raghavendra Rao and megastar Chiranjeevi (after Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari and Rowdy Alludu).

A remake of the Tamil hit Mannan, the film, produced by K. Devi Vara Prasad and co-starring Nagma-Vani Viswanath, completed 100 days in as many as 39 centres and was the third silver jubilee film of Chiranjeevi (after Pasivadi Pranam and Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari).

Story:

Raju (Chiranjeevi) is a do-gooder who helps his fellow co-workers while working in Visakhapatnam shipyard, but when his mother suffers a paralytic stroke, he moves back to Hyderabad and looks for a job. Uma Devi (Nagma) daughter of industrialist Bapineedu (Raogopal Rao) takes over the business from her father and helps it to reach new heights which also sees her head strongness reach new heights as well. In this scenario, she not only rejects Ranganayakulu's(Kaikala Satyanarayana) son's marriage proposal but insults them when the father-son duo show up at her house. To get their revenge, they send goons to kill Uma Devi and as fate would have it, Bapineedu shows up in the car instead of Uma Devi and is rescued by Raju who asks him for a job which Bapineedu readily agrees to. Raju wins over the employees within no time and takes on the high handedness of Uma Devi and her management. This leads to constant conflict and Uma Devi decides to marry Raju so that he would not interfere anymore. And to this end she plays an emotional blackmail game with Raju's mother and eventually makes Raju agrees to marry her. But Raju continues to trouble her even after marriage. Uma Devi's secretary, Bhavani(Vani Viswanath) is also a friend of Raju which leads to jealousy as well. In the meantime Ranganayakulu with the help of Uma Devi's manager Sarangapani (Ahuthi Prasad) schemes against Uma Devi to sabotage her factory. The rest of film deals with how Raju thwarts the schemes of Ranganayakulu as well as teaches Uma Devi to be humble.

Trivia:

The song Bangaru Kodi Petta, picturised on Chiranjeevi and Disco Shanti, was a big hit.

It grossed a record Rs. 45,75,358 from Sandhya 70mm, Hyderabad, where the film had a 183-day run.

The 100-day celebrations of the film were held at Brahmananda Reddy Stadium in Guntur on 26th July, 1992.

The film was later remade in Hindi as Laadla [Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Raveena Tandon].

The movie ‘Mahatma’ has been in news from quite some time by the virtue of publicity and controversies with songs. The expectations have been huge on the movie and let us see how it gelled with the anticipations.


Story:

Dasanna (Srikanth) is a rugged youngster who lives in a ‘basthi area’ and his life style includes only fights, daily intake of alcohol and non-veg. His livelihood depends on rowdism. In the process he happens to encounter an advocate Krishnaveni (Bhavana) who keeps on bailing him out whenever he gets into police case.

On the other hand a political rivalry runs between ruling party leaders Dattanna (Jayaprakash Reddy) and Kalarani (Jyothy). In the flow of events, Dasanna happens to become a tool between Datthanna and Kalarani.

But Gandhism attracts Dasanna all of a sudden. He stops alcohol, non vegetarianism and also fights. He starts the process of accepting mistake. How that affected him? How that helped his area? That forms rest of the story.


Performances:

Srikanth:
He did his best with utmost care. His expressions worked really well for every scene. He also tried to show some expertise in dances as well although choreography is pretty poor. The shades of his portrayal in Shankaradada Zindabad are seen on some scenes.

Bhavana:
She is the biggest minus for the movie and there is nothing more speak about.

Jagan:
Although a trivial role, he deserves a paragraph here. He appears in various get ups- NTR, Tanguturi Prakasam. Pingala Vekayya, Alluri Seeta Rama Raju, Potti Sree Ramulu and Gandhiji. The song ‘Kontha mandi inti peru…’ was shot on him.

Brahmanandam appears in guest comedy and that is just ok. Jayaprakash Reddy aptly grooved in the role of Datthanna. Jyothy is ok as Kalarani. Uttej and Paruchuri Venkateshwara Rao have played as side kicks to protagonist.


Charmee spilled glamour in an item song and Navneeth Kaur also made her hot presence on screen although appeared for a few seconds.

Editing has suffered some problems (Gandhi’s statue looks shabby for some time and clean and neat for other time in the same scene). Cinematography is good. Story is fine and screenplay could have been better. On a whole it’s a laudable attempt by director but could have carried the subject with more intensity.

Analysis:
The take-off of the movie is pretty hysterical with the title song ‘Talayetti jeevinchu Tammudaa..’ But the actual story wouldn’t start till the interval bang. The beginning of second half promises bigger things but that goes with various ups and downs. First 45 minutes of the movie goes in run of the mill style and that could have been confined to 20 minutes jumped into actual story.

The song ‘Indiramma inti peru kaadura Gandhi’ that raised controversy was changed to ‘Konthamandi inti peru kaadura Gandhi’. But Censor didn’t bother to cut down the word ‘f...k off’ used by artiste Jyothy for Kalarani character in first half.

Director seems to have ignored masses and that is evident through his selection of heroine and the get up given to her. Any other heroine would have aptly fitted in the requirement.

On a whole, the spirit of non violence, truth, accepting the mistake and perseverance are conveyed in this attempt through some scenes. But more homework should have done to make it a better product since the title is ‘Mahatma’!!!

Story:

The film starts with an old man living as a recluse near a famous temple. When he ventures out to a farm, he is beaten by the farmers who believe that he has come to steal the goats. When they hand him over to the police, the officer in charge identifies him as a once famous musician, Anantha Sharma (Sangeeta Samrat = Emperor of music), who has been missing for four years. The inspector informs his aunt (who teaches music in his native village) of this and the past of Anantha Sharma is narrated through flashback.

(Begin flashback) Anantha Sharma is a widely respected Carnatic singer with a large ego. This is established when he rejects the Padma Sri bestowed upon him by the Government of India, as he believes that the other awardees are not worthy to be mentioned with him.

Gangadhar (Master Manjunath) lives in the same village. He rejects the norm (taking music classes and going to school) and sits by the riverside. The river inspires him to sing many songs in different tunes. His music teacher, also the policeman's aunt, recognizes his natural talent and tries to nurture it. His school teacher (the music teacher's husband) is also fond of Gangadhar.

Gangadhar wants to become a great singer like Anantha Sharma and his father(Dharmavarupu Subrahmanyam) encourages him. His day comes when Anantha Sharma is honored in an auditorium. Gangadhar sings a song ("Aa Nathi Neeyara") in honor of Anantha Sharma which many consider to be much better than any of Anantha Sharma's four decades of work. The boy is hailed as a child prodigy by everyone, including the music teacher's wife.

Anantha Sharma wants to imprison Gangadhar's talents. So he asks Gangadhar to stay in his house and learn music as one must be well-experienced to sing on stage. He goes to the extent of copying one of his tunes and he sings it on stage to get back his lost glory. But Gangadhara and Anantha's wife (Radhika) find out. He now feels guilty and defends himself that he has done it as he was afraid this child will destroy his name and fame etc.

In this emotional moment, he suffers a heart-attack. To show his gratitude towards his adopted mother (Radhika), Gangadhar kills himself. For this means that there is no competition for Anantha Sharma's title of "Sangeeta Samrat." But the event shocks the villagers and they start calling him a murderer. To escape the public anger and insults, he runs away to be a recluse (End flashback).

Anantha Sharma is still unconscious while in the police station. When he awakes, he finds himself in the house of Gangadhar's music teacher. The husband of music teacher tells him that they have forgiven him and asks him to go back to his house. At his house, he finds his wife(Radhika) conducting music classes in his house (an institute named as 'Gangadhar Music Academy') for little children.

He sits down amongst the children learning the music basics from his wife. The movie end with a scene when a young girl next to him chides him gently by correcting his way of singing a basic song note.
