Bollywood is known for bringing out good suspense, thriller and horror stories. However, the Tollywood too made inroads into it, and films like ‘Mantra’, ‘Anasuya’ which are basically suspense thriller subjects were proved big hits in recent times. With the success of ‘Mantra’, its producer Chukka Kalyanram, looked for yet another suspense thriller subject and okayed Yandamuri Virendranath’s story. The film made with a relatively low budget and hence, he chose Sivaji as hero again, as he is affordable and adequate to the story. At the same time, the megaphone was handed over to a debutant Machakanti Ramakrishna, a novice. However, he handled the story by penning screenplay for himself.

Story:

Vamsi (Sivaji) buys a used and fully-furnished beach house in Vizag from a real estate dealer. He saves a dancing girl Maya (Shraddha Das) from a goon in a local gathering. She stays along with Vamsi in his house during that night because it was raining heavily. As they explore the house in the night, they find a diary written in 2002. They find out that it was written by the man who owned that house in the past. His wife gets killed and she is rumored to be staying there as a ghost. And the events mentioned in the diary start happened to this pair. The rest of the story is about unlocking the mystery behind the house.

Performance:

The film basically has two pairs of hero and heroines. While Sivaji and Shraddha Das paired up as one couple, another pair is Sridhara Rao and Mousami Udeshi. Sivaji, the main hero is adequate and such roles is very common for him. Earlier too, Sivaji played such roles in a couple of films. Sivaji maintained good body language and his attire, with a very casual look, gives the impression that it was Sivaji who could do justice to such roles. Shraddha Das, who has the male looks in some angles is okay. Especially, the scenes where she portrays the horror looks were perfectly caught by the camera. Siradhara Rao and Mousami Udeshi are adequate in their roles. Harshavardhan, Dr Siva Prasad did justice to their respective roles.

Technical:

Though a debutant, Radhakrishna explained all the thoughts exactly what was in his mind on the celluloid. Mantra Anand’s background score is another highlight of the film. There are very few dialogues in the film as the entire film is nothing but a narration from a book. Cinematography by Srinivasa Reddy is adequate and art by Vishaal is impressive. Gauthamraju once again proved his seniority and made the film crisp.

Analysis:

Though the script, screenplay and direction by Ramakrishna are okay, there are few lapses which should have been avoided had he concentrated more on the film. The subject ‘hallucinations’ is not new to the Telugu audiences. Director Ramakrishna narrated the entire story by visualisation. The only drawback of the film is that it has no mass elements, but the film would definitely attract the youth and class audiences. The film may run with above average rating because of the nice movement of subject and in maintaining the suspense thriller element with perfect and gripping screenplay.

'Satyameva Jayathey', the direct lift from the Hindi film 'Khakee' released today. Let us see how far the film is treated to bring it to Telugu audiences.

Story:

Sathya (Dr Rajasekhar) is a sincere police officer and gets grand image as encounter specialist. Chief Minister (M Satyanarayana Rao) also supports Sathya for his encounters. In the process of doing his duty by attacking terrorists Sathya loses his wife. And he shoots the concerned corrupted officer who resulted in the death of his wife. Although the shoot-out of that officer is a crime, with the support of CM he comes back to join his duty again. He goes on a mission to catch hold of an alleged terrorist Dr Ansari with his team (Sivaji, Sai Kiran, Siva Reddy and Neetu Chandra). Rest of the story is nothing but 'Khakhee' which can be watched on screen.

Performances:

Dr Rajasekhar has portrayed his angry young police officer role which has been his trade mark. Sai Kumar gave dubbing for him but the sharpness sounded to have reduced. Neetu Chandra did lot of over action and the Telangana dialogues didn't suit her but appeared artificial. Sivaji has some role to play while Sheril Pinto is plump and not so attractive. Siva Reddy has something to enact while Sai Kiran has very trivial part.

Milind Soman portrayed the terrorist role with a little bushy beard. Ahuthi Prasad and Sayaji Shinde are routine.

Minister M Satyanarayana Rao has portrayed a lengthy role with his brand of dialogue delivery as sincere and clean CM. In fact, he quenched the desire to become Chief Minister that way at least on celluloid.

Background score is weak and direction also didn't meet contemporary requirement. Things could have been spruced well before delivering. Dialogues are also pale and inactive except the line, "Criminals wouldn't dare to touch even the doll in the hand of kids if government gives full power to police".

A scene was conceived purposefully to target Chiranjeevi and his love for Mother Teresa in a satirical way in the introduction scene of Dr Rajasekhar.

Analysis:

'Satyameva Jayathey' has turned the attention of media and public with various special attractions. This is the film made by Rajasekhar's family after joining in Congress. Minister M Satyanarayana Rao acted in this film in full length role but not as guest. It's also publicized that there are a few scenes those point out Chiranjeevi and other opposition parties. Apart from all this, actress Neetu Chandra had strife with Rajasekhar and Jeevitha which has hit the media in big way recently. All these factors raised some interest on this film among public.

Although Dr Rajasekhar has picked up Hindi film 'Khakhee' directly he claimed that it's the original story by adding some scenes with his self interest. On a whole the narration went insipid with weak background score and non-exciting moments. The film brought boredom for the audiences those haven't watched Khakhee as well. And for the audiences those watched 'Khakhee', it brings bigger ennui as they tend to draw comparisons between the two.

First half is filled with monotony and dull moments while the second half is packed with action that's directly taken from Khakhee. Khakhee sounds convincing with the old-police officer characterization of Amitabh Bachchan. But here in Satyameva Jayathey Dr Rajasekhar projected himself as young hero and continued with action episodes those he did in Magadu and Ahuthi decades ago. It's like gluing the color of spring for autumn.

The direction part is also just appealing for C-center audiences and they too may not watch it repeatedly. The vulgarity is also maintained in the film like any other C-grade film which isn't welcomed by a lady director. The scenes where Dr Rajasekhar beats on the 'back' of Apoorva and the dialogues of Neetu Chandra while explaining her affinity for Dr Rajasekhar sounded vulgar and unnecessary. Although they are targeted to impress masses, the angle of perversion is seen in them. To conclude, the film didn't meet the expectations.

DAIRY, Another Thriller from Mantra Makers

Shooting of Gen Next Movies and Great Ocean Entertainments Dairy has been taking place at a fabulous location in Kerala. Debut director Machakanti Ramakrishna seemed to have decided to give the audience a different feel of the location. He is making a thriller. “A thriller with a poetic touch,” is how he describes the film. Near the backwaters, a wooden house set has been constructed to shoot major portions of the film. The house looked plush on the outside but the eerie atmosphere inside is palpable. The cameras were placed in the corner of one room. Cinematographer Srinivasa Reddy and his team are about to shoot a scene on lead actors Sivaji and Shradha Das.

While Sridhar and Sajitha are a couple, Sivaji and Shradha Das are total strangers who by chance come to live in that mysterious house. “They find a dairy in the house. That sets the course for the thriller,” informs the director during the break. An associate with S.V. Krishna Reddy, T. Prabhakar and Sagar before taking this mantle as the director, Ramakrishna has worked for 18 films.

“My friend and producer Kalyan Ram Chukka earlier made the hit film Mantra. Arun’s story appealed to me so much that we thought it will be the perfect launch pad for me. It is a very enjoyable thriller and you will find a new Sivaji in it. Heroine Shradha Das too has an equally important role. She will go places in the industry after the release of this film.


Dr. Sivaprasad is cast in a crucial role. It is a character driven film with scope for each and every actor to make an impact. We have shot about sixty per cent of the movie at Vizag and thirty per cent in Alleppy including a song. The rest of the portions including two songs will be shot in Hyderabad in February.” As we bid adieu to the cool retreat, producer Kalyan Ram said that he is planning to release the mysterious Dairy in April as a summer treat.

Kuberulu from Srinivasa Reddy is a disappointment particularly after his Bommana Brothers Chandana Sisters and Yamagola Mallee Modalayyindi. The director is known for minimum guaranty of returns. Kuberulu tag line Vallaki Annee Appule may well reflect on the producers of the film.

The Synopsis

Yarlagadda Siva Ram (Sivaji) is young man and an ardent fan of the chief minister. Even the abbreviation of his name is YSR. He has political ambitions and wants to become the panchayat president of his village. His friend Babu (Ali) happens to be a fan of N Chandrababu Naidu.
Siva Ram borrows money left, centre and right in the village to contest elections. He loses the polls to his rival (Chalapathi Rao). Unable to repay the loans, he goes to Hyderabad to make money somehow. His friend Babu also joins him.
They meet their friend Ram Babu (Krishna Bhagawan) with great difficulty. But Ram Babu is after a gang who stole Nizam’s jewelry. Sivaram and Babu under the leadership of Rambabu make attempts to get the treasure which has been concealed by the looters and get rich.
The rest of the story deals with whether these three succeed in their attempt.

The Performance

Sivaji’s imitation of Dr YS rajasekhar Reddy and Ali’s mimicry of Nara Chandrababu Naidu falls flat in the first half. They have nothing much to do in the second half by way of comic antics. Krishna Bhagawan also fails to evoke any laughter.

Kondavalasa, AVS, Raghu Babu and Suman Setty too could not bring any laughs by their episodes. Farzana is just a glamour prop. Hema, Apoorva, Kinnera and Ranjitha just go through the motions.

The Techniques

The story is the weakest link. The village politics do no lend any credence to what the protagonists do later, going on a leisurely treasure hunt. For any character to be credible, the actions of the character should be justified by convincing incidents with sufficient reasons for motivation.

Even a ribald comedy has to have convincing characters. Srinivasa Reddy has taken a weak plot and diluted it much further by lackluster screenplay.

The cinematography, audiography and editing is good, but of what use when they try to capture an insipid storyline with unimaginative incidents and contrived situations.

Verdict: Kuberulu is just an average fare which brings in more fatigue than any rib-ticklers.

Sexy Bollywood star in Sivaji's Dairy

It is a known fact that the impact of Bollywood has always been on the Telugu circuit and especially the influence is felt strongly when it comes to glamour and nudity. Now, after the bikini mania getting into Tollywood from Bollywood, here is someone who is arriving with a semi naked show.

She is none other than Maushemi Udheshi who is known as one of the steamiest bombshells with a smoking hot body who is all set to make her debut in Telugu with the film 'Diary'. The film is being made by the creators of the hit movie 'Mantra'. The lucky man to take the heat of Maushumi is none other than the struggling hero Sivaji.

While it is not really sure how much of her oomph would be used, sources say that if Maushemi has been roped in all the way from Bollywood then there must be surely something on the cards for the audience here. Get ready to be taken over by a heat wave folks!!!

There are many directors, who could tickle the funny bones, with the movement of the story itself. They could script the screenplay and story in such a way that the scene itself brings smile on the face of audiences. They were able to reap good entertainment with heroes itself. Heroes like Venkatesh, Rajendra Prasad, Raviteja, Vishnu and the latest Ram, were able to give entertainment, despite showing heroism on the screen. There some other directors, who keep a comedy track, which has a link with the story and at times, without any link as well. But, keeping the entire comedians of Tollywood in his star cast, director I Srikanth failed to provide entertainment, though the subject was proved a hilarious comedy show in its original form (Bagham Bagh).

Plot
Anandam (Brahmanandam) has two heroes in his drama company Sivaji (Sivaji) and Ravi (Ravikrishna). An NRI contractor (AVS), who was fascinated with the beauty and dance of the heroine of the drama company (Sameeksha) books them to stage shows in Bangkok. Before they leave for the abroad trip, both the heroes misbehave with the heroine. This forces her to quit the job and leave the drama company just before they were about to board the flight. To make use of the abroad trip, the entire troupe boards the flight sans the heroine. They somehow manage the contractor that their heroine was busy with some modelling and will join them later. Then the heroes start search for a suitable face as heroine. In the process, Ravi was able to bring Arpitha (Kamalini Mukherjee), into their troupe. After giving performance in one show, she meets with an accident due to her mental disorder (suicide tendency). Later, she was taken away by one Mahendra (Raghu) who claimed to be her husband. Soon, the trio (Anandam, Sivaji and Ravi) gets implicated in abetment of suicide case. How they were able to come out of the case? What makes her to commit suicide? Did really Arpitha die? What made her to say that she is the wife of Mahendra? Why the gangsters were after the trio? Answers to all these questions form part of the climax.
Performance

It is Brahmanandam, who is a seasoned comedian, delivered good performance in the entire film. All the other artistes, who were also seasoned comedians could not evoke even a smile on the faces of the audiences, leave alone a big laugh. Moreover, good artistes like Sivaji and Sivajiraja too gave a very unimpressive performance. Ravikrishna kept a big blank face in the film. Neither he showed any feelings in his face nor had put up a good body language. Kamalini is the only saving grace in the film. However, she was also portrayed in a deglamorous character. However, she showed ease in a couple of dances which gave a little relief.
Technical Dept

Dialogues by Ramesh-Gopi are very unimpressive. Camera work by PS Babu is a big minus. Though a major part of the film was shot in Bangkok, he failed to grab the beautiful locales with his camera skills. Songs lack any foot-tapping dances and music by Sai Karthik is not at all melodious. Only a remix song, which has a mixture of first stanzas of popular songs evoked good response in the theatre. Screenplay and direction by I Srikanth are very disappointing. The director failed to run the film with a good tempo.

Conclusion

The audiences who go to the theatres with lots of expectations on the entertainment would face miserable disappointment in the absence of any scenes worth watching. The producers who took more than one and a half years to complete the film, were not in a position to release the film in the absence of any takers, possibly because of the unimpressive movement of the film. Somehow, they were rescued by some distributors who dared to release the film. It is very much doubtful whether any of the buyers would get back their money or not.On the whole there is nothing attractive in this film and the comedy element lacks the luster in it. This movie is surely not going to run for more than 2 weeks.

With the movie Mantra’s success it has been proved that horror & the tolly audience are welcoming thriller films, which have some substance in them.
What sets mantra apart from earlier said film is that it maintains the suspense through out the film and sheds its story revealing about a supernatural element or a human hand that kills people in a spooky villa called Mantra Nilayam

Story
Mantra Mantra’s (Charmme) parents die when she was young and she lives with her friend Vinny (Karuna Sri). She inherits an ancestral property called 'Mantra Nilayam' in the outskirts of Hyderabad. Mantra Nilayam is called as haunted house because of two untimely deaths in that farm house few years back. She wants to sell it off, but no body comes forward to buy the property due to its reputation. A professor comes forward to buy that house with a condition that somebody should stay there for three months. Hero (Sivaji) is a small time goon who looks after land settlements. Hero wants to stay in the house so that he would get a commission of the sale once 'Mantra Nilayam' is sold. The rest of the story is all about how Hero demystifies everything.
Performances:

Charmme is extremely good in a shot where she acts like as if she has seen the ghost. She is very good in the title role. She exposed liberally in the film. She has put on a bit of excess weight and it shows up in certain odd angles. The dubbing provided by Sunita should also be commended.
Sivaji is the man for all the seasons in Telugu film industry. He is just amazing and fits into any role effortlessly. He did a typical role of a Pokiri in this film. His comedy timing is excellent. He brings credibility to his character.
Others: The fine thing about this film are characterizations. All the characters in the film are well defined. Chitram Seenu is good. Vijay creates humor. Jeeva is excellent. Kausha did a special role in this film. Mallikharjuna Rao and others are adequate.

Other stuff:
The picturisation of the songs is a huge disappointment though. When you listen to the audio, you tend to imagine exotic locales and saucy visuals, but what you get is a rather cheesy number, shot tackily with unknown faces. Even the Maha maha number, does not go beyond what was shown in the promos.
To put it short and sweetly, Mantra is a film you wouldn’t regret watching. However, don’t try to find out what the climax is. Charmee is at her courageous best, both in terms of her character and her career.
Background music by Anand is excellent. Cinematography, Color grading and sounds play vital role in any horror films. And all these three departments are good in this film. Since it is a horror film, the director preferred to shoot the most of the film is dark rooms and during the night. Dialogues are adequate.

KAVERI JHA READY FOR NEXT FLICK

Everyone remembers the spicy seductress Kaveri Jha, who set the screens on fire with her debut movie 'Nagaram'. She is actually an air hostess and has made it clear that, she can give up her job, if she gets good offers. Now, another offer has come to her in the form of a new movie, which is being directed by the well known S V Krishna Reddy. The hero of the film would be Sivaji and it is upto Krishna Reddy now as to how he can get the best out of Kaveri.
