BS Ranga, a Kannadiga, who had distinguished as a cinematographer for 'Laila Majnu,' 'Stree Sahasam' and 'Devadasu,' established the film production company, Vikram Productions, and produced the first Telugu movie 'Ma Gopi,' which he himself directed. He then started 'Tenali Ramakrishna' in Telugu and Tamil. As the producer, director and photographer of Tenali Raman, the Tamil version of Tenali Ramakrishna, he acquitted himself creditably in all the three departments. The money that the gorgeous settings in the movie demanded did not bother him. Samudrala Raghavacharya's dialogues added extra effect to the movie in Telugu.
NTR took on the role of Krishna Deva Raya in Telugu and Tamil, while ANR and Sivaji Ganesan filled the role of Ramakrishna in Telugu and Tamil respectively. Bhanumathi did the role of Krishnasani in Tamil and Tamil as well, while Jamuna was given the role of Kamala, and Jayalalitha's mother Sandhya was assigned the role of Tirumalamba. Athreya, then not a known writer, was offered the role of a courtier in the court scene. He sneered at the offer and came away saying that the act was not for a man of his learning. The pair Viswanathan and Ramamurthy provided excellent music for the movie.
