ACHARYA ATHREYA |

Date of Birth:
7 May 1921, Sullurupeta, Andhra Pradesh,
Date of Death:
9 September 1989, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh,
'Manasunna manishiki sukhamu ledanthe' - a very simple phrase, yet undisputed fact. Inner feelings of an anguished human in a song have been so gorgeously penned by none other than Acharya Athreya garu. Popularly called as 'Manasu Kavi' by all his fans, Atreya was an adept in conveying intense human emotions in simple idiom.
Kilambi Venkata Narasimhacharyulu aka Atreya was born on 7 May 1921, in SulluruPeta. He was one of the proud Indians to be arrested for participating in Quit India Movement by the British. His passion towards telugu literature opened golden gate for him in 1951 when he wrote story, dialogues and lyrics for the movie 'Deeksha'. His debut song was 'poraa baaboo po! poyi choodu ee lokam pokada' sung by M.S.Rama Rao.
Most of his lyrics focused on subtle issues like love and dejection. Being an exemplary lyricist, he articulated tears of human agony as 'Gunde mantalaaripe channeellu kanneellu' in 'Padutha teeyaga challaga'; related the speech of heart as 'Manasu moogade kaani basunnadi daaniki' in 'Mudda banthi poovulo'(Mooga Manasulu), in a simple, but extraordinary style. His 'Mouname nee bhasha o mooga manasa'(Guppedu manasu) rendered the in-depth connotation regarding the nature of individual heart. 'Manasu moogadi, maatalu raanidi, mamatha okate adi nerchinadi' in 'E teega poovuno'(Maro Charithra) once again expresses the trait of human soul in Atreya's classic style. He was excellent in depicting the inner feelings of a distressed mind or the irresistible love of a lonesome heart. 'Manasu gathi inthe'(Prem Nagar), 'Ekkada vunna emaina'(Murali Krishna), 'O hrudayam leni priyuraala'(Kanne Manasulu), 'Andamaina jeevithamu addhaala soudhamu' (Vichitra Bandham) are a few examples of Atreya's mark.
'Raathi sthambhalake chethanathvamu kaligi sarigama padanisa padamule paadaga' in 'Aho Andhrabhoja! Sree Krishna Deva Raaya' from Manchi Manasulu was a paradigm for his outstanding articulation. 'Theta theta telugulaa tellavaari velugulaa'(Prema Nagar),'Ee pagalu reyiga pandu vennelaga maarinademi cheli' (Sirisampadalu), 'Neevu leka veena palukalenannadi', 'Paadamani nannadaga valena' (Dr.Chakravarthy) are a few of several other classic compositions from Atreya.
His devotional songs for the film 'Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam' - 'Sesha saila vasa Sri Venkatesa', 'Ennallani na kannulu kaayaga eduru chootura gopala' , 'vegaraara prabho, paahi hare' depict the other side of 'Manasu Kavi'.
'Chitapata chinukulu paduthuvunte'(Atma Balam), the first super hit rain song in the telugu film history was the downpour from Atreya's pen. It was followed by another rain song 'Chitaa pataa chinukulatho, kurisindi vaana, merisindi jaana'(Akka Chellellu). Atreya wrote a different rain song 'Swathi muthyapu jallulalo' for the film 'Prema Yuddham' in 1989, during his final stages of life. His dialogues and songs for the films 'Abhinandana' and 'Prema' were applauded by one and all.
'Pacha gaddi koseti paduchu pilla', 'Ettago unnadi olammi' from Dasara Bullodu,'Chengaavi rangu cheera kattukunna chinnadi' from 'Bangaru Babu', 'Ekkadiki pothavu chinnavaada' from 'Atma Balam' are Atreya's punching mass lyrics that are amazingly popular among all sections even today.
His dialogues for many films like Moogamanasulu, Mangalya balam, Velugu Needalu, Dr.Chakravarthy, Murali Krishna, Pelli Kanuka, Jaya Bheri are distinctive in the history of the telugu films. Predominantly, heart touching dialogues in Moogamanasulu, Velugu Needalu and classic dialogues in JayaBheri turned each of those movies a masterpiece.
Besides being a lyricist, story and dialogue writer, Atreya also produced & directed 'Vaagdaanam' and acted in two films, 'Aadarsam' and 'Kodenagu'.
Acharya Atreya passed away on 9 Sep, 1989 leaving behind his great writings for all of us to relish. We can still hear the heart beat of 'Manasu Kavi' in his everlasting writings. 'Poinollu andaru manchollu, unnollu poinolla theepi guruthulu'.

D YOGANAND (DIRECTOR) |

Date of Birth:
16 April 1922, Madras, Tamil Nadu, India
Date of Death:
23 November 2006, (heart attack)
Yoganand, the prolific, bilingual filmmaker who was most active from the 1950s to 1970s, passed away recently at his residence in Chennai. He was 85.
Tall, slim and handsome, he was a popular figure in the movie world of old Madras and much respected for his technical expertise.
He also had an excellent track record in Telugu and Tamil cinema.
He had the unique distinction of directing all the top stars of his time, both in Telugu and Tamil such as Sivaji Ganesan, M.G.Ramachandran, Gemini Ganesan, S.S. Rajendran, K. Balajee, N.T.Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Relangi, P. Bhanumathi, Savithri, Padmini, Vyjayanthimala, Jayalalithaa, Pandari Bai, B. Saroja Devi and Devika.
Background
D. Yoganand was born in 1922 into an affluent family in Andhra and was later given for adoption to a successful businessman dealing in photographic materials and who had his own studio.
This event in his life drew him to the art of photography and he learnt the tricks of the trade of still photography. Not surprisingly he felt drawn to cinema.
However, the call of the Indian Freedom Movement proved more powerful. He participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 and came close to great Congress leaders like Rajaji, Tanguturi Prakasam and Bulusu Sambamurthi.
Inspired by the life of great Indian revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh, he actively took part in cutting the wires of the electric trains plying between the Madras Beach and Tambaram stations.
Returns to old love
Realising that politics could not be his future, he went back to his old love photography and the movies.
He joined the technical unit of the celebrated filmmaker Gudavalli Ramabramham (`Mala Pilla,' and `Raithu Bidda' both cult movies of Telugu cinema), learnt film editing and worked as an assistant editor in Ramabramham's hit movie `Maya Lokam' (1945).
Later he joined the well-known cinematographer M. A. Rehman and worked as his assistant in many films.
He became friendly with all the prominent men of the Madras movie world of that era and got the break to direct the bi-lingual film,
`Marumagal/Ammalakkalu'(1953), for the dynamic, multilingual producer S.M.Letchumanan Chettiar (better known as `Lena Chettiar').
In a bold move, he cast N.T.Rama Rao and Padmini, who were making their way up in the film world.
This film took a good look at middle class family life at many levels.
In it, Yoganand created two mischief mongering female characters, who burned coals on dried cow-dung flat cakes as a symbol of setting fire to the happy families. An innovative and classic touch.
The metaphor made an impact and marked out Yoganand as a director certain to go places, and he did!
Both the versions were hits and some of the songs in the Telugu version became popular.
Rama Rao boldly engaged Yoganand to make his socially-relevant and meaningful Telugu movie, `Thodu Dhongalu' (1954), which had a strong Leftist tint in its thematic content and presentation.
That was the period when many young, idealistic filmmakers, who believed in Leftist philosophy had come into Telugu cinema and achieved success, such as L.V.Prasad, Tathineni Prakasha Rao, and Yoganand.
He became the in-house filmmaker for Lena Chettiar and his famed Krishna Pictures and made many box-office successes as well as the iconic film, `Madurai Veeran' (1956). The film sowed the seeds for MGR to be projected as more than a mere good-looking hero.
Some of Yoganand's memorable movies are `Kaveri' (1955, Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini), `Anbu Engey,' (Pandari Bai, S. S. Rajendran, K. Balajee, and Devika in a minor role), `Engal Selvi' (1960. A. Nageswara Rao and Anjali Devi) and `Parthibhan Kanavu' (1960, Gemini Ganesan, Vyjayanthimala, and B. Saroja Devi).
When L.V. Prasad planned to remake in Telugu the successful Tamil film `Ethirpaaraathathu,' he chose Yoganand to direct it.
`Ilavelpu,' a big hit, was remade in Hindi as `Sharada' (with Meena Kumari and Raj Kapoor) by Prasad.
Telugu films
Some of Yoganand's mention-worthy Telugu movies include `Ammalakkalu' (1954), `Thodu Dhongalu' (1955), `Jayasimha' (1956, the debut of Waheeda Rehman),`Pelli Sandhadi' (1960), `Vummadi Kutumbham' (1968), `Mooga Nomu' (1970) and `Vemulavada Bheemakavi' (1976).
A serious filmmaker, he worked hard on the screenplay in association with his writers and honed it to perfection before finalising the cast and planning the production.
With changing trends in Tamil and Telugu cinema, he found that it was no longer possible to work in his idealistic atmosphere and slowly moved away after his last movie, `Charithra Nayakan' (1984).
He leaves behind a large circle of friends, like this writer, not only in the world of movies but also in Telugu literature and politics and everyone will miss him.

WAHEEDA RAHMAN |
Waheeda Rehman (born May 14, 1936) is a famous Indian actress whose prime was in the late-1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. She has an alternated date of birth of February 3, 1936, and stands 5'1" tall.
Waheeda Rehman was born into a traditional Muslim family in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh in 1936. Her father, a DM (District Magistrate), was posted all over the South. She had dreamt of becoming a doctor, but destiny willed otherwise and she could not undergo proper schooling, due to some infection in her lungs. She was trained in Bharatnatyam and, prodded by her helpful parents, hit the silver screen with the Telugu film Jaisimha (1955), followed by Rojulu Maraayi (1955). She lost her father at the age of twelve.
She was spotted by Guru Dutt in a song in a later film and was brought to Bombay and cast as a vamp in his production C.I.D. (1956), directed by Raj Khosla. A few years after joining Hindi film industry, she lost her mother. After the success of C.I.D., she was given a leading role in Pyaasa (1957). It was at this point that she got involved in an unsuccessful love affair with director Guru Dutt. Their next venture together, Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), depicted the story of a successful director's fall from grace
after he falls for his leading lady, and foreshadowed events in Guru Dutt's own life as well. Guru Dutt's marital status and her success in films outside his tore them apart personally and professionally, although they continued to work together in 1960's Chaudhvin Ka Chand. She completed Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) under some strain. They broke away from each other after the film's indifferent reception at the Berlin Film Festival in 1963. Guru Dutt committed suicide in 1964.
Waheeda Rehman was cast as "Gulabi" in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film 'Abhijan' in 1962, which she obliged canceling her usual schedules in Bombay.
Her career continued throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her roles in Guide (1965) and Neel Kamal (1968), but despite good roles in subsequent films some of the films failed at the box office. At around this time, Kamaljit Singh (who starred opposite her in Shagun (1964)) proposed marriage. She accepted the proposal and they were married on April 27, 1974. After her marriage, she shifted to a farmhouse in Bangalore and took to farming. She bore two children named Sohail and Kashvi. After her appearance in Lamhe (1991) she retired from the film industry. On November 21, 2000 her husband died following a prolonged illness she moved back to her sea-facing bungalow in Bandra, Bombay where she lives currently.
In recent years she made a comeback to films with Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Water (2005) and Rang De Basanti (2006) which were all critically acclaimed.
In October of 2004, a Waheeda Rehman film retrospective was held at the Seattle Art Museum and the University of Washington where Waheeda participated in spirited panel and audience discussions on her most memorable films, Pyaasa, Teesri Kasam and Guide. She was and still is a big Diwani Hundi fan.

L VIJAYA LAKSHMI |
Vijayalakshmi acted with the leading actors of the day, including MGR, Sivaji Ganesan,
N.T.R,A.N.R,Prem Nazir, Jaishankar and Muthuraman. She acted with Jaishankar in many films. According to her, Nagesh is the best dancer the industry has produced, and she had the opportunity to dance with him in ‘Kaakkum Karangal’. L. Vijayalakshmi now lives with her husband and son in the United States.
For her performance, Viji, as the leading lady of yesteryear is popularly known, was hailed as the dancing genius. The heroine of more than 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi is today a merry-tempered chartered accountant working as Budgeting Officer of Virginia Polytechnic University in the United States. Dance has been a passion for L. Vijayalakshmi. And, that was why her family shifted from Pune to Chennai in search of a Bharathanatyam guru for her. She was a quick learner and acclaimed dancer Kumari Kamala, who was her inspiration, presided over her ‘arangetram’.
Critics and magazines had then praised her as a new find - a combination of Kamala and Vyjayanthimala. She used dance as a ladder to films, fame and fortune.
Film directors and producers took a fancy to her dancing skills; they sensed that a dance sequence by Viji in their film could be useful. The first offer was a Telugu movie. It was a dream come true for her. Telugu industry was fond of classical dance, and almost all films in Telugu opted for Viji’s dance sequence.
“It was then that Tamil industry opened its doors for me,” says Viji. ‘Bhavani’ was my first Tamil film. Modern Theatres’ ‘Edhirigal Jakkirathai’, ‘Iru Vallavargal’, ‘Vallavan Oruvan’, ‘Kaakkum Karangal’, ‘Ayirathil Oruvan’; Sridhar’s ‘Sumai Thangi’ and ‘Panchavarnakili’ made me a big star.”
“Jayakanthan’s ‘Pathai Theriyudhu Paar’ was produced by Nimai Ghosh in Hindi, and I acted with Meenakumari. Then, I acted with Mehmood in ‘Shabnam’, which gave me recognition in the Hindi belt. And, then I turned to Malayalam. I acted with Prem Nazir in three movies, including ‘Laila Majnu’.
“‘Ooti Varia Uravu’ was my last film [in the late 1960s]. It was during this film that my brother’s friend, Suraj Kumar De Datta, an agricultural scientist working in the Philippines, saw my photograph and fell in love with me. He proposed to me on the sets.”
Tough decision
With a prosperous film career ahead of her, it was not easy to take a decision. But, her parents helped her make the choice by highlighting the significance of getting married at the right time.
After ‘Ooti Varai Uravu’ she bid adieu to the film industry.
A pure vegetarian, Viji found it difficult to take a bite of the fish she was offered as part of the Bengali marriage ritual. In 1969, she settled down in Manila, and with nothing else to do took up higher studies. Agriculture was her chosen subject.
In 1977, when the then Prime Minister, Morarji Desai, visited Manila, the Indian Embassy there asked her to give a dance performance at a function organised in his honour. “Morarji ‘bhai’ called my husband lucky when he saw my Bharatanatyam performance,” Viji said. “I shifted to the U.S. in 1991 and studied CPA (Chartered Public Audit) and got a job as Budgeting Officer in Virginia Polytechnic University.”

BASAVARAJU VENKATA PADMANABHA RAO'S PROFILE |

Basavaraju Venkata Padmanabha Rao, better known as Padmanabham to generations of countless fans in Telugu cinema, turned 75 recently. He began his tryst with the tinsel world in 1943 when he was just 12, when the legendary director Gudavalli Ramabrahmam gave him a break in Maayalokam. Since then, Padmanabham traversed a long distance by acting in more than 400 movies.
"If Ramabrahmam gave me a break in films, K.V. Reddy gave me some major hits. Shavukaaru in 1949 was my first major hit, and it also gave me a footing as a comedian. The very next year, Paatala Bhairavi came along and it helped me find a permanent place in the world of Telugu cinema," Padmanabham recalled .
Like many others of his era who had no godfathers to give them a straight lift in films, Padmanabham too landed in Madras with only fire in his belly and a talent to sing and imitate any actor of those days. Though he worked with almost 80 directors in his long career, Padmanabham cherishes most his association with Gudavalli Ramabrahmam, Ghantasala Balaramayya, L.V. Prasad and K.V. Reddy. "They werereally great directors," he says.
Padmanabham is proud that he never aspired for any role but directors sometimes designed certain roles exclusively for him. "A comedian in those days was always one of the four main characters in a film, standing on the same level as a hero, heroine and villain. I don't think comedians of the present era are getting the same importance," he remarks.
The veteran finds it hard to mention any particular comic role as his most memorable one, but makes a special mention of the role of a rickshaw puller that he played in Desoddhaarakudu (1975). "It had ample measure of `karuna rasa' in it and I could display the other shade of my talent," he says. The role became famous for the song Aakalayyi Annamadigithe Pichchodannaru Naayaallu.Padmanabham, who directed eightfilms in all, introduced S.P. Balasubrahmanyam to the film industry through Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna. Kathaanayika Molla, which he directed in 1969 fetched him the A.P. Government's award. Padmanabham fondly recalls the healthy professional relationship he had with comedians of his era - Relangi, Balakrishna and Siva Rao. He says every comedian of the present generation is immensely talented but handicapped by the inept handling of comedy in general. Presently acting in a TV serial Paatala Bhairavi, "not a remake of that old classic," he hastens to add, Padmanabham continues to be in the best of his health, thanks to his regular yoga sessions for the last 50 years.

ILAYARAJA |

Ilaiyaraaja(born June 2, 1943 as Gnanadesikan) is an Indian film composer, singer, and lyricist. He has composed over 4,000 songs and provided background music for more than 800 Indian films in various languages in a career spanning 30 years. He is based in Chennai, India.
Ilaiyaraaja was the most prominent composer of film music in South Indian cinema during the late 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. His work integrated Tamil folk lyricism and introduced broader Western musical sensibilities into the South Indian musical mainstream. He has thrice won the Indian National Film Award for best film scoring. He is married to Jeeva, and the couple's two sons (Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja) and daughter (Bhavatharini) are film composers and singers.
Early life and education
Ilaiyaraaja was born into a poor rural family in Pannaipuram, Theni district, Tamil Nadu, India. He was the third son of Daniel Ramaswamy and Chinnathayammal. Growing up in a farming area, Ilaiyaraaja was exposed to Tamil folk music, such as the songs sung by farmers working in the fields. His formative contact with music-making and performance came at the age of 14, when he joined a travelling musical troupe headed by his elder step-brother, Pavalar Varadarajan, who was a propaganda musician for the Communist Party of India. He journeyed through numerous villages, towns and cities in South India with his brothers for about ten years as one of the musical Pavalar Brothers. He first tried his hand at composing music during this period: he set to music an elegy written by the Tamil poet laureate Kannadasan for Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister.
Arriving in Madras (now Chennai) in 1968, Ilaiyaraaja enrolled under the tutelage of Dhanraj, a music teacher, as it became apparent that formal knowledge in music such as musical notation was vital for a professional music career. He was introduced to Western classical music during his training, and the music and compositional styles of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, among others, were influences that would later become a motif in much of Ilaiyaraaja's compositions (such as the use of counterpoint). Ilaiyaraaja's classical music training culminated in him completing a course with a gold medal in classical guitar (higher local) with the Trinity College of Music, London.
Career and music
In Chennai , Ilaiyaraaja worked in a band for hire involved in performing music for various stage shows and formal occasions. Ilaiyaraaja also worked as a session guitarist and keyboardist/organist for film music composers and directors such as Salil Chowdhury from West Bengal, who often recorded music in Madras. Later, he was hired as an assistant to the Kannada film composer G K Venkatesh, an event that marked his entry into film music composition and direction. He assisted this music director in 200 film projects.During this stint, he learned the practical methods of orchestration, and would hone his compositional ability through frequent experiment accomplished by persuading session musicians to play, during their break times, the scores that he wrote.
Ilaiyaraaja's break as a full-fledged composer came in 1976, when film producer Panchu Arunachalam decided to commission him to compose the songs and film score for a Tamil-language film called Annakkili ('The Parrot'). The resulting soundtrack, together with others that quickly followed, earned Ilaiyaraaja recognition for his adaptation of Tamil folk poetry and music to popular film music orchestration.Ilaiyaraaja helped reinvigorate the Tamil film music which, by the mid-1970s, was experiencing a stagnation of ideas.[19] As demand mounted for his 'new' sound, Ilaiyaraaja emerged by the mid-1980s as the leading film composer and music director in the South Indian film industry. Besides Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films, he has scored music for Hindi (or Bollywood) film productions such as Sadma (1983), Lajja (2001) and Cheeni Kum (2007). He has worked with noted Indian poets and lyricists such as Gulzar, Kannadasan, Vairamuthu and T.S. Rangarajan (Vaali), and film directors such as Mani Ratnam, K. Balachander, K. Vishwanath and Singeetham Srinivasa Rao.
Ilaiyaraaja's arrival onto the scene of film music composition in South India broke some new grounds in the industry. It saw increased efficiency in the film scoring process and a greater centralisation of expressive control in the hands of a musical director. The Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam illustrates:
"Ilayaraja (sic) would look at the [film] scene once, and immediately start giving notes to his assistants, as a bunch of musicians, hovering around him, would collect the notes for their instrument and go to their places. When the orchestra played out the notes, they would be perfect, not just in harmony but also in timing — the background score would commence exactly where it should and end at the exact place required... A [film] director can be taken by surprise at the speed of events.
Ilaiyaraaja was the first film composer to extensively employ within the Indian film music framework the harmonies and string arrangements intrinsic to Western classical music. This allowed him room to craft a rich tapestry of sounds for films, and his themes and background score gained notice and appreciation amongst Indian film audiences. The range of expressive possibilities in Indian film music was broadened by Ilaiyaraaja's methodical approach to arranging, recording technique, and his drawing of ideas from a diversity of musical styles. According to musicologist P. Greene, Ilaiyaraaja's "deep understanding of so many different styles of music allowed him to create syncretic pieces of music combining very different musical idioms in unified, coherent musical statements". Ilaiyaraaja has composed Indian film songs that amalgamated elements of genres such as pop, acoustic guitar-driven Western folk, jazz, rock and roll, disco, funk, doo-wop, march, bossa nova, flamenco, pathos, native folk, Afro-tribal, and Indian classical. By virtue of this variety and his interfusion of Western, Indian folk and Carnatic elements, Ilaiyaraaja's compositions appeal to the Indian rural dweller for its rhythmic folk qualities, the Indian classical music enthusiast for the employment of Carnatic ragas, and the urbanite for its modern, Western-music sound.
Style
Ilaiyaraaja's music is characterised by the use of an orchestration technique that is a synthesis of Western and Indian instruments and musical modes. He pioneered the use of electronic music technology that integrated synthesisers, electric guitars and keyboards, rhythm boxes and MIDI with large orchestras that also featured the veena, venu, nadaswaram, mridangam and tabla The popularity of Ilaiyaraaja's music is attributed to his flair for catchy melodies, and to his employment of subtle nuances in chord progressions, beats and timbres. Ilaiyaraaja's songs typically have a musical form where vocal stanzas and choruses are layered by orchestral preludes and interludes. They often contain polyphonic melodies; the lead vocals are interwoven with supporting melody lines sung by another voice or played by instruments. Polyrhythms are also apparent, particularly in songs with Indian folk or Carnatic influences. The melodic structure of his songs demand considerable vocal virtuosity, and have found expressive platform amongst some of India's respected vocalists and playback singers, such as K.J. Yesudas, S.P. Balasubramaniam, S. Janaki, P. Susheela, K.S. Chithra, Malaysia Vasudevan, Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar.Ilaiyaraaja has sung his own compositions for films, and is recognisable by his rustic and nasal voice. He has penned the lyrics for some of his songs in Tamil and other languages. Ilaiyaraaja is known for his evocative film themes and background music, and examples of these include his work for Punnagai Mannan (1986), Mouna Raagam (1986) and Geethanjali (1989).
Non-cinematic output
Ilaiyaraaja's first two non-film albums were explorations in the fusion of Indian and Western classical music. The first, How To Name It? (1986), is dedicated to the Carnatic master Tyagaraja and to J. S. Bach. It features a fusion of the Carnatic form and ragas with Bach partitas and fugues and Baroque musical textures. The second, Nothing But Wind (1988), was performed by flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and a 50-piece orchestra and takes the conceptual approach suggested in the title — that music is a natural phenomenon akin to various forms of air currents (e.g., the wind, breeze, tempest etc.). He has also composed a set of Carnatic kritis that was recorded by electric mandolinist U. Srinivas for the album Ilayaraaja's Classicals on the Mandolin (1994). Ilaiyaraaja has also composed albums of religious/devotional songs. His Guru Ramana Geetam (2004) is a cycle of prayer songs inspired by the Hindu mystic Ramana Maharishi, and his Thiruvasagam in Symphony (2005) is an oratorio of ancient Tamil poems transcribed partially in English by American lyricist Stephen Schwartz and performed by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. Ilaiyaraaja's most recent release is a world music-oriented album called The Music Messiah (2006).

Ilaiyaraaja's composition Rakkama Kaiya Thattu from the movie Thalapathi (1991) was amongst the songs listed in a BBC World Top Ten music poll. He composed the music for Nayakan (1987), an Indian film ranked by TIME Magazine as one of the all-time 100 best movies, a number of India's official entries for the Oscars, such as Anjali (1990) and Hey Ram (2000),and for Indian art films such as Adoor Gopalakrishnan's FIPRESCI Prize-winning Nizhalkkuthu ('Shadow Kill') (2002). Ilaiyaraaja has composed music for events such as the 1996 Miss World beauty pageant that was held in Bangalore, India, and for a documentary called India 24 Hours (1996).
Live performances
Ilaiyaraaja rarely performs his music live due to heavy commitments to composing. His last major live performance, the first in 25 years, was a four-hour concert held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, India on 16 October 2005. The show was widely televised both in India and abroad. Less well-known was his live 2004 performance in Italy at the Teatro Comunale di Modena, an event-concert presented for the 14th edition of Angelica, Festival Internazionale Di Musica, co-produced with the L'Altro Suono Festival. He had done a few small-scale shows early in his career in Sri Lanka and Malaysia and was involved in a charity concert to raise funds for the construction of a Hindu temple in India.A television retrospective titled Ithu Ilaiyaraja ('This is Ilaiyaraja') was produced, chronicling his career.
Awards and honours
Ilaiyaraaja has won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the films Saagara Sangamam (1984), Sindhu Bhairavi (1986) and Rudraveena (1989). He won the Gold Remi Award for Best Music Score jointly with film composer M. S. Viswanathan at the WorldFest-Houston Film Festival for the film Vishwa Thulasi (2005).
He was conferred the title Isaignani ('savant of music') in 1988 by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and received the Kalaimamani Award, an annual award for excellence in the field of arts from the Government of the State of Tamil Nadu, India. He also received State Government Awards from the governments of Kerala (1995), Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh (The Lata Mangeshkar Award) (1998) for excellence in music.
He was conferred honorary doctorates by Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu, India (Degree of Doctor of Letter (Honoris causa)) (March, 1994), the World University Round Table, Arizona, U.S.A. (Cultural Doctorate in Philosophy of Music) (April, 1994), and Madurai Kamarajar University, Tamil Nadu (Degree of Doctor of Letters) (1996). He received an Award of Appreciation from the Foundation and Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (1994), and later that year was presented with an honorary citizenship and key to the Teaneck township by Mr. John Abraham, Mayor of Teaneck, New Jersey, U.S.A.

Biography
Sridevi, also known as Sreedevi Ayyapan, was born on August 13, 1965 in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. She is an Indian actress who has starred in hundreds of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films.
Personal
Her parents were Ayyappan, a lawyer, and Rajeswari. Sridevi has a sister, Srilatha, and a brother named Satish. Sridevi's mother is from Andhra Pradesh and her father from Tamil Nadu.
Her father died while she was filming Lamhe, her mother while she was making Judaai. Although it is the Hindu custom that the son lights the funeral pyre, Sridevi lit the pyre for her mother's last rites.
Numerous sources claim that Sridevi had a relationship with actor Mithun Chakraborty from 1986 to 1987, and ended the relationship when she found out that he had not divorced his first wife, Yogita Bali. Many versions of this story say that the couple was secretly married and the marriage was later annulled. It is not clear how much of this story is true and how much is gossip.
Sridevi married film producer Boney Kapoor on June 2, 1996. The couple has two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi. Through her husband she is related to the large Surinder Kapoor film clan. Actor Anil Kapoor, her co-star in many films, is her brother-in-law.
Career
Sridevi started her career as a child artiste in the Tamil movie Kandhan Karunai (1967). During her early adult career, she acted in a number of Tamil and Malayalam movies. Many of her Malayalam movies were directed by I. V. Sasi. Some examples of her notable Malayalam movies are: Aadhyapaadam, Aalinganam, Kuttavum Sikshaiyum, Aa Nimisham. In 1976, she got her first big break in Tamil movies as a heroine in K. Balachander's Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite both Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth. In many ways, this movie was a landmark in Tamil filmdom. It was also one of Rajnikanth's first major movies. After Moondru Mudichu, Sridevi had a succession of huge hits with both these Tamil superstars. With Kamal Haasan, she acted in movies such as Guru, Sankarlal,Sigappu Rojakkal,Thaayillamal Naanillai, Meendum Kokila, Vaazhve Maayam, Varumaiyin Niram Sigappu, Neela Malargal,Moondram Pirai,16 Vayathinile. With Rajnikanth, she acted in movies such as Dharmayuddham, Priya, Pokkiri Raja, Thanikattu Raja, Adutha Varisu, Nan Adimai Illai, etc. She was the number one actress in Tamil films during the period 1979-83.
During the same time, Sridevi also made inroads into Telugu language movies. She acted with all major heroes in Telugu. A number of her Telugu movies were made by K. Raghavendra Rao. With N. T. Rama Rao, she acted in movies such as Konda Veeti Simham, Vetagadu, Sardar Paparayudu, Bobbili Puli etc. With A. Nageswara Rao, she acted in movies such as Mudulla Koduku, Premabhishekham, Bangaru Kanku, Premakanuka etc. With Krishna she acted in movies such as Kanchu Kagada, Kalavari Samsaram, Krishnavatharam, Borripellum Bolludu, Khaidi Rudrayya etc. After Kamal Haasan, Sridevi has acted the most number of movies with Krishna. Towards the tail end of her Telugu career, she started acting in Hindi movies. Many of her initial Hindi movies starred Jeetendra and were remakes of her Telugu movies, mostly directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, and K. Bappaiah. She has won two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for Meendum Kokila and Kshana Kshanam.
In 1978, she starred in her first Hindi film, Solva Saawan which failed at the box office. However, her second movie, Himmatwala, went on to be a super-duper success. Sridevi became a Bollywood star overnight and the film earned her the sexy nickname "Thunder Thighs". This was followed by the masterpiece Sadma which is hailed as a classic today and remains the most definitive child-woman performance of her career. Throughout the 1980s, she starred in a galaxy of superhit films including Tohfa, Nagina, Mr. India, Chandni, and Chaalbaaz, in which her delightfully crazy capers won her the first Filmfare Award for Hindi films. Sridevi became the No.1 star and the highest paid actor during this time. Nagina is remembered for her iconic dance sequence in the film's climax. Shekhar Kapur's all-time hit Mr. India won her rave reviews for her classic comic-timing and earned her the name Miss Hawa Hawai while her Charlie Chaplin act in the film remains an unforgettable moment. Yash Chopra's poetic fairy-tale Chandni proved to be the most spectacular hit of the Queen Bee's career. Yash Chopra again directed her in the path-breaking modern day classic Lamhe (1991), where the sensitive and intense double-role act immortalised her forever in Hindi Cinema. It also won her, her second Filmfare Best Actress Award and also the prestigiousInternational Best Actress Award. The superstar ruled on with powerful performances like Khuda Gawah, Gumrah and Laadla wowing the audiences. She was even approached by the Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg for a role which she had to refuse due to her workload in India. She remained the Number One for more than a decade which is the perhaps longest reign for any Hindi actress. She is one of the few Bollywood actresses who dictated terms and for whom roles were written. The failure of the multicrore Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja proved to be a major setback. After the superhit Judaai (1997), she left the industry in order to marry Boney Kapoor and raise her two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi.
After a six-year hiatus, Sridevi returned to the small screen, briefly, in the popular Sahara sitcom Malini Iyer (2004-2005). She also appeared on Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai for Karishma Kapoor (2004) and as a judge in the TV show Kaboom (2005). She also starred in the Lux ad along with Shah Rukh Khan. She is slated to return to the big screen in a sequel to Mr India.
She is a member of the Board of Directors at the Asian Academy of film and television.
She performed an 80's medley at the 52nd Filmfare Awards on February 24th, 2007 to a grand reception from fans and colleagues.

K VISWANATH |

He began his career as a technician in a studio at Chennai and later assisted Mr. Adurti Subba Rao in direction. He also worked as an assistant to director Ramnoth. He debuted as a director with Aatma Gowravam, which starred Akkineni Nageswara Rao. However, his full prowess in film-making flowered with a subsequent film called Siri Siri Muvva.
His films used to tackle the relevance and influence of Indian music/culture/art in the modern era. Films in this mould include Sankarabharanam . He made a series of such classical oriented movies all showcasing the bliss in Indian art forms. The list includes Saagara Sangamam , Sruthi Layalu, Sirivennela , Swarna Kamalam , and Swathi Kiranam .
He also made significant contributions on the social front with films like Saptapadi ('The seven Steps', signifying the Indian caste system), Swathi Muthyam ('Pure Pearl'), Swayam Krushi ("Attitude Towards Work" — conveying the message that dilligence and dedication is indispensable in achieving success), Subhodayam ('Good Morning'), Subhalekha ('Wedding Invitation' — a critique of the dowry system), Aapadhbhaandhavudu ('Savior'), and Subha Sankalpam ('Good Will').
Swathi Muthyam was India's official entry to the Oscars in 1986. Viswanath was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for his contributions to Indian film.
His films mirror the erosion of cherished values of Indian culture yet he remains critical of those morals that make one stand against his fellow human. For example, in his movie Saptapadi, Vishwanath brilliantly addresses certain loopholes in an inadmissible cultural system like intercaste marriage. A temple chief-priest gets his daughter’s daughter married to his son’s son – unaware that she is musically fused to a flutist who is a Dalit (one of a lower caste, but of a higher humanness.) Later, as the priest sees the marriage falling apart, he comes to know the heroine’s erstwhile bonding. It takes the priest intense introspection to realise how nasty it is to look down upon a fellow human because of getting imprisoned in caste. He could now anchor his judgment of someone in the “content of character” rather than caste. Across numerous other films, Vishwanath has reechoed similar social concerns that still resonate in the audiences’ minds.
The music for his films were composed by K. V. Mahadevan and Ilaiyaraaja. Vishwanath has also worked with artists like Hariprasad Chaurasia, Kelucharan Mohapatra and Sharon Loven for some of his films. Vishwanath also ventured into mainstream acting recently.

Kamal Haasan gained the Indian cinema's attention in 1960 by playing an Award-winning role in his first blockbuster, Kalathur Kannamma and since then he has acted in over two hundred Indian films. Kamal Haasan has acted in several various character roles winning four Indian National Film Awards for his criticallly acclaimed acting. An accomplished dramatic actor and celebrity, he received India's third highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri for his services to Indian cinema in 1990. Kamal Haasan performs predominantly in leading roles in high-budget and major studio films, ranging from romantic comedies and drama to action thrillers. His most popular films include Moondram Pirai (1982), Saagara Sangamam (1983), Nayagan (1987), Indian (1996) and Hey Ram (2000). However in 2007, Kamal Haasan has attempted to portray ten different characters in his upcoming project, Dasavatharam, therefore making the attempt a possible World Record.
Biography
Kamal was born to Srinivasan and as their fourth and youngest child. His father an advocate gave all three of his sons(Charu Haasan,Chandra Haasan,Kamal Haasan) the suffix of "Haasan" as a sign of his friendship to one Mr. Haasan. He is also a trained playback singer and sometimes pens the lyrics for the soundtracks of some of his recent films. He is an able performer of the Bharatanatyam dance form. He had assisted in choreography early in his career. He is multilingual.
Sixties

While Beatles were making music and VietNam was at war with US and the hippies in Haight Ashbury were doing freak-outs, Kamal made his screen debut with Kalathur Kannamma produced by AVM production at the age of six and it won him the first National Award for Best Child Artist. He followed it with appearances as a child actor in movies that featured MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Nagesh and Gemini Ganesh.
Seventies
As an actor in adult roles, he received a lukewarm response for his initial few films like Avargal, Aval Oru Thodarkathai, Solla Thaan Ninaikkiren, Maanavan and Kumara Vijayam. His first highly popular movie was 16 Vayathinile with Sridevi. This established him as a popular teen idol at the age of 23. Kamal Haasan and Sri Devi were a popular acting pair and have acted together in 23 films. The year following his appearance in 16 Vayathinile, Kamal Haasan acted in director K. Balachander's Telugu hit Maro Charithra.
In many of his late 1970's films, he was usually the hero with Rajinikanth as the villain.
During the 1970s, he has played a host of characters that include:
* a ventriloquist in Avargal (He actually learnt ventriquilism for his role in the movie)
* a village innocent in 16 Vayathinile
* a disco jockey in Ilamai Oonjaladugiradhu
* a psychopath serial killer of women in Sigappu Rojakkal
* a buck-toothed villager in Kalyanaraman
* Aladdin in Alavudheenum Arpudha Vilakkum
Eighties
His first attempt at direction came through an unfortunate turn of events with the demise of director T.N. Baalu during the filming of Sankarlal in 1981. Kamal reached superstardom in 1979 with multiple classics and mass blockbusters which coincided with the decline of MGR/Sivaji era in movies (MGR quit movies in 1977 while Sivaji, nevertheless continued to act till the 90s). A huge factor behind Kamal's success is his versatility.
In this period, he has played amongst other roles, :
* a blind violinist in Raja Paarvai at the age of 27 (first screenplay by Kamal)
* a classical dancer in Saagara Sangamam
* a mentally challenged man who falls in love in Swathi Muthyam
* an undercover cop in Kaaki Sattai
* a benevolent underworld don in Nayagan (Leader) at the age of 33 (directed by Mani Ratnam)
* an unemployed youth who chances upon a week of opulence in the silent movie Pushpak
* an honest cop, a dwarf circus clown and a fun-loving mechanic in Apoorva Sagodharargal at the age of 35 (screenplay by Kamal)
* a corrupt mayor in Indrudu Chandrudu, Telugu
* a spy in Vikram
* an illiterate villager in Sakalakala Vallavan
Apoorva Sagodharargal, which released in 1989, was the first Kamal film to gross almost Rs.100 million at the box office
Nineties
Kamal's second attempt at direction came through another unfortunate turn of events when the original director Shantanu Sheroey failed to do a good job while filming Chachi 420 in 1997. Inspired by the European style of closer-to-reality docu-dramas, Kamal moved decisively towards making films for select classes in the 90s, isolating some of his ardent fans.
In this period, he has played:
* as a Doctor in hilarious Tamil movie Sathy Leelavathy
* as quadruplets in the comedy Michael Madhana Kamarajan
* as an old and highly-corrupt mayor in Indiran Chandiran
* a mentally-challenged man in the romanceGuna
* a modern youth turned villager in Thevar Magan at the age of 38 (written and produced by Kamal)
* a hapless villager who lost and re-discovers his family in a metropolis in Mahanadhi
* a revolutionary lecturer in Nammavar
* a special police squad officer against terrorism in Kuruthipunal
* a righteous old revolutionary as well as his corrupt son in Indian
* an old nanny in Avvai Shanmugi at the age of 42
Unlike the eighties, Kamal films in the late nineties lost sheen and were less successful. However, Indian which released in 1996 grossed almost Rs.200 million at the box office marking a new peak in his career.
Noughts
Kamal's multi-faceted talent came to the fore in off-screen departments like direction, scripting, screenplay, special effects and these reached full bloom in this decade.
Again, he has played diverse roles in this period, which include:
* a Hindu fundamentalist in Hey Ram
* a mentally affected Sri Lankan Tamil in the comedy Thenali
* a pair of twins (one of which is a deranged psychopath) in Aalavandhan
* an ardent bachelor turned lover in Pammal K. Sambandam
* a randy pilot in the comedy caper Panchathantiram
* a disabled altruist in Anbe Sivam
* a rustic wrongly jailed for the murder of his lover in Virumaandi (directed by Kamal)

* an old age student of MBBS degree, Vasool Raja M.B.B.S, a remake of Hindi film, Munna Bai M.B.B.S
* as DCP Raghavan, a smart and suave policeman with his "Raghavan instinct" out to trace a serial psychopath killer duo in Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu
Thenali
