Review:

Leader has been postponed many times and faced many hurdles. Finally it released today. I think it is the most awaited movie honestly in the recent times in Tollywood (Atleast I was waiting eagerly). Firstly I was very excited that Shekhar took the Politics as the theme. And secondly the cast from Hero Rana to everyother artiste. We have big names like Kota, Suhasini, Ahuthi Prasad, Subba Raju, Gollapudi, Tanikella Bharani and all.

Can you expect something insensible from Shekhar Kammula? No way at all. One more honest attempt from Shekhar in the form of Leader. I went through the reviews of other websites. I thought they need some more time to get matured and accept the content. Instead of understanding the content they are complaining about the scenes that they did not understand. Another movie website which is very close to our Telugu cinema fans wrote 3 reviews. What a comedy!! Firstly they tried to defame the movie. Not worked. I bet you there will be huge positive opinion in the public about the movie. So seeing this they wrote another review "Review 2" by praising the movie. So you can easily understand the quality of that website. Unfortunately that website doesnt have comments section. If there had been a comments section it would have been a different situation.

Ya coming to the review. As usually I wont let the story out. But I will quote some extra-ordinary dialogues in the movie which I think many did not get them with the pace of the movie.

1) Shekhar Kammula all the way. The dressing of Rana especially a plain Shirt with a normal pant with in-shirt resembles Shekhar's dressing. Though the movie had some loopholes but the positive feel of the movie drives you away from those loopholes. Hatsoff to Shekhar for such a positive and honest movie.

2) Mickey J Meyer. Wow!! His Background score is life for the movie. What a stunning background he gave. He will get huge applause from the audience.


3) Rana did justice for the character. Many times his voice resembles Venky's. Especially his smile can drive girls crazy. He can be a good actor like Venky with his selection of movies. I hope he will do some meaningful movies in the future.

4) Priya Anand is good with his accent and you will enjoy the jokes. But her character should have been carefully crafted.

5) Richa Gangopadhyay. Another Shekar Kammula Heroine. First when you see her in some modern outfits there wont be a big response. Later in the film when she will be seen in saree. you say Wow. What do you think? Is it the beauty of the saree or Richa?

6) Kota. What an actor he is. If I want to write about him I can go on and on. When you think of a politician Kota will be the man that comes to your mind.

7) Subbaraju and Rao Ramesh were good as usually.

8) There are some technical problems with clarity of the film in some scenes and abrupt ending sometimes.



I dont want spoil the movie. But I think the most fantastic scenes in the movie are

The conversation between Rana and Gollapudi about present politics. The dialogue is not the same but the meaning is.
Gollapudi says " Ippudu janalu Chicken Biryani thintunnaranuko..manam valla daggara adhi lageskoni Pappannam istham.. vallu godavalu cheyaru aa pappannam thintaru..tarvata pappannam kuda lageskoni annam pedtham..appudu kuda godavalu cheyaru... tarvata aa annam kuda lageskuntam.. lageskoni Free Rice antam... veetiki dheniki godavalu cheyakunda Free rice ani egurukuntu vastaru..votlestharu..."

I think Shekhar's anger is not on politicians but more on the people who are not at all thinking. Great one Shekhar.

Shekhar Kammula's LEADER with RANA for Summer

Sekhar Kammula’s ‘Leader’ with RaNa (son of D Suresh Babu and grandson of D Ramanaidu) is under brisk progress. ‘Ananda Thandavam’ fame Rukhmini was booked as heroine of the film. But now it is learnt that Priya Anand (USA), who is fluent in Telugu and Tamil, along with yet another new heroine by name Richa is going to make her mark through this film. AVM Productions is producing the film.

Sekhar Kammula to direct Rana, Grand son of Ramanaidu

Anand, Godavari and Happy Days director Sekhar Kammula is now getting ready to direct another film with Rana as hero. After planning the re-make of Happy Days in Hindi and also a movie with Nagarjuna, he finally decided to direct a film with Rana as hero.

Rana will be introduced to telugu film industry with this movie. Rana who will be dbuting as hero in this new movie is the grand son of Ramanaidu, son of Suresh and nephew of Venkatesh. Rana was waiting for a correct launch pad for his entry into Tollywood and he finally got it in the form of Sekhar Kammula.

This Sekhar Kammula-Rana new film will be produced by AVM production house. This movie will be officially launched in January 2009. AVM is also producing another movie in telugu with Varun Sandesh as hero.

Story:

Akbar (Kamal Kamaraju) is an auto driver in a village called Devarakonda and also works as paper boy in the early morning. He is an orphan as lost his father in childhood. He, along with other young uneducated gang lives under the rule of Masterjee (Rao Ramesh), the village head. Babar, a Muslim leader in that place wishes to divert Akbar as religious chauvinist. But Akbar follows 'love all' concept.

A Brahmin family newly comes to that village in exodus from another village and resides in a house. Their plan is to start a hotel business there and also sell avakaya. Lakshmi (Bindu Madhavi), the elder daughter in that family falls in love with Akbar.

How Akbar and Lakshmi unite? How the Hindu-Muslim love is accepted by Lakshmi's father who believes in strict Brahminism? How the hotel business will be started by that family? How Akbar becomes a hero in his village from mere auto driver? All these form the rest of narration.

Performances:

Kamal Kamaraju is ok with his physique and bearing but needs to groom in expressions and other histrionics. New girl Bindu Madhavi is ok with the character she played in the film. And she too needs to groom herself to show versatility.

Music by Manikanth is good and cinematography deserves great mention. The songs 'Mamidi kommaku maa chilakammaku', 'Nannu chupe addam..' and 'Govardhanameththaadu gopalude…' have received good applause.

Director would have done batter work on dialogues. The required punches were lacked on a whole leaving audiences without sufficient entertainment.

Analysis:

It's a movie that moves in a different but slow pace. Technical brilliance is seen in making with creative cinematography, worth mentioning framing, enticing music and quality RR. The tempo of the movie and also the subject chosen for it recalls the 1990s Delhi Doordarshan TV serials like Govind Nihalani's 'Tamas', 'Malgudi Days' etc. It's a genre of movie that would be liked and disliked in equal form. In other words to say, there would be good number of audiences on both the sides. Director Aneesh tried to balance the equation between his creativity and commercial point. But on a whole at the end, it gives a 'boring feel' for some and a 'good relief' for others.

The film aptly suits to hit the film festivals across the world. It has some message in it. Aneesh would have got better experience with the films those will be played in film festivals. Like Thangar Bachchan's 'Pallikoodam', where the lead role works hard for a social cause and the betterment of a place, here the lead role in 'Avakaya Biryani' also does the same. That may not be taken as the only common point between the two. The way the story is narrated with remote village backdrop, limited set of characters with typical characterizations etc.

To sum up, the film has lacked in energy and audiences find it difficult to get connect to it. When story is not running at faster pace that should be filled in by comedy. Or if there is no comedy to show, the story should run. Although Aneesh has comparison with many award winning film makers, he brought some doubts in the heads of some audiences:

How a village family goes to another remote village for livelihood? Many audiences felt that it would have been convincing had they gone to city. And again why the heroine goes to Hyderabad to sell pickles?

How the village head Masterjee speaks in pure Andhra accent in Devarakonda, a Telangana village?

What is the characterization of Babar? He roams as vagabond on a motor cycle for some time and dresses up like MIM leader and sits along with CM other time and appears as 'Mutton Shop Mastan' in another frame. Finally he loses himself in an auto race with hero!!!

Leaving those trivial doubts aside, the film has got many concoctions that suit for Film Festivals. Religious tolerance, inter-religious love, village politics, auto race, auto driver growing as Mandal President and all. The style of narration is something different without the influences of any contemporary director. The notable minus in the movie is lack of sufficient humor and comedy. A couple scenes between village head Masterjee and an eccentric fried of hero Akbar during auto race bring laughs. Aneesh, after his blatant satire on Tollywood with 'Confessions of Film Maker' has made this commercial flick as his debut. Only a separate set of audience can patronize this movie.

Sekhar Kammula to enter Bollywood

Critically acclaimed director Sekhar Kammula is getting ready to direct a film in hindi. After the continous success of Anand, Godavari and Happy Days, Sekar Kammula wants to try is luck in Bollywood.

Sekar Kammula is right now producing a telugu movie titled Avakaya Biryani in the direction of Anish Kuruvilla. The hindi movie will go on floors once Avakaya Biryani releases in theaters.

Looks like Sekhar Kammula is following the foot steps of Ram Gopal Verma who also started his career in telugu cinema and shifted his base to Bollywood and became one of the top notch directors there.

Story

Happydays Chandu (Sandesh), Rajesh (Nikhil), Shankar (Vamsi Krishna), Tyson (Raahul), Madhu (Tamanna), Appu (Gayatri Rao) and Sangeeta (Monali Chowdary) are a bunch of freshers in a college. They all together make a fine gang. Chandu - Madhu, Rajesh - Appu Shankar - Sangeeta soon build up their relation and become pairs. Tyson - a nerd with a heart of gold - ends up falling in love with a senior Sravanthi (Sonia). The rest of the story is how they spend their four years of their education in the campus and express love for their respective dear ones.

Artists Performance

Main male leads:
This film boasts of perfect casting. You see characters, not the actors. All the new comers performed in an extremely natural way. And by the time movie ends, we end up understanding the characteristics and traits of each and every one. As per the footage and likeability of the character is concerned Varun Sandesh takes the top ranking. He is extremely lovable and his striking resemblance to hero Siddhardh is an added advantage. He understood the character very well. The next is Raahul. Lots of credit should be given to Sekhar Kammula for penning such a beautiful character and Raahul suited it to the tee. Nikhil is pretty good as the tapori. He got considerable importance towards the latter half of the second half. Vamsi Krishna is a pretty good actor, but did not get enough scope to perform. The two guys who had donned the role of seniors are good.

Main female leads:
Tamanna is the main heroine of the film. She is very good and she oozed natural expressions in all her scenes. Gayatri Rao is also very natural and likable. However, it is Sonia who steals the show with her extremely natural and at times subtle expressions. Monali Chowdary is good as the bad girl. Kamalinee Mukherjee did the role of an extremely glamorous lecturer and she dubbed her own voice. She is cool.

Story - screenplay - direction:
There is not much of a story in this film. It is about the love of four couples spread over four years. What makes the big difference to this simple and plain story is director's ability to create interest throughout the film with neat screenplay. He brought out tremendous emotion in the scenes of separation and reunion between the pairs.


Some Best Scenes :

1. The separation scene of Tyson and Sravanthi is very fascinating.
2. Rajesh’s reaction after he beats up his friend Shankar.
3. The way he ended the love thread between Tyson and Sravanthi. If Sravanthi accepted Tyson's love, then it would appear that the director is giving messages that it is ok to love your senior girls in the college.

Some Best Dialogues :

1. Love and fear can never coexist.
2. A boy's character is judged by the kind of girls he roams with.
3. The college life may fail you to achieve great academic rewards, but it will definitely give you the ability to achieve any thing.
4. College Days are Happy Days. The days that follow college days are purposeful days.

Other departments:
Music of the film is excellent and the two songs in the first half (music + visuals) take you to the different level. Micky J Meyer is just superb. Other department that dominates the movie is great cinematography. Visuals are a feast to the eyes. Vijay C Kumar who followed single color pattern for Anand and Godavari came up with different color sceheme for this film so that the visuals match the vibrancy of college atmosphere. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh deserves special mention. He made sure the scenes flow in the film is smooth.

Early life

In Sekhar's childhood, he went to St. Patrick's High School. He was very popular among his friends and became a class leader. He completed his intermediate studies from St. Alphonsa's and did his engineering from Osmania University, Hyderabad. He later landed in the United States to pursue graduate study in Computer Science. After a brief stint in the IT industry, he enrolled in the MFA program at Howard University, Washington, D.C.

Career

Sekhar's first film was Dollar Dreams. This film was a critical success, and won him the National Film Award for best debutant director. His second film, Anand, was huge hit in the year 2004. His most recent film, Godavari, became an instant hit to the classes.He was done magic with new actors in happy days in the year 2007.It was a very big hit.Every student identified his life in this film ,that was the sucsess of happy days.
