She has two sisters, Nandita (Nagma), who is also an actress, Radhika (Roshni), and a younger brother Rahul. She has a Psychology Degree from Mithibai College of Arts, Bombay. She is one of the very few Indian actress who had a clean image among the general public. She had dated Surya for over 4 years and married him on 11 September 2006. After the wedding, she announced her decision to stop acting. She's expecting her first baby in the month of August 2007.However she continues to do ad films and some work for TV. She is one of the few actresses who remained at top for a very long time. Jyothika continuely gave hits after hits and she was still in the lead among newcomers like Sneha, Trisha, Asin and Nayanthara. She is considered even more successful than Simran (her proffessional rival in the industry) becouse the latter only remain at top for 5 years unlike Jyothika who have been in the lead for past 10 years. In a recent poll conducted by popular magazine in Chennai, she has been named in top 5 all time tamil actresses. Jyothika was ranked 4th after Savitiri, Revathi and Saroja Devi.

Her first movie was the Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, directed by Priyadarshan, opposite Akshaye Khanna. Though the film did not do well at the box office, she was noticed by the Tamil and Telugu industry. She proceeded to act in Kollywood, where she debuted in a guest appearance in Vaali. Her first Tamil movie as a heroine was Poovellam Kettuppar with Surya. A string of successful movies followed, among them Kushi, Dumm Dumm Dumm and Snegithiye. In 2003 she starred in Dhool with Vikram, in Kaaka Kaaka with Surya and in Thirumalai with Vijay. Other films include Nagarahavu (Kannada) and Tagore (Telugu). In 2004, she acted in a double role for Perazhagan and received the Dinakaran Best Actress Award for it. In 2005, she acted in Manmadhan opposite Silambarasan and won accolades for her role in it. Her most successful movie to date is Chandramukhi in 2005 with Rajinikanth. She is widely recognised for her notable role in the film Chandramukhi, which is a remake of Apthamithra, a successful Kannada film (that also starred the late actress Soundarya), which in fact was the remake of a national award Malayalam film "Manichithrathazhu" starring national award winning Malayalam actress Shobhana. It's reported that her first and last Malayalam movie Seethakalyanam is not going to be released because of financial problems. Her last films are Pachaikili Muthucharam, Mozhi and Manikanda in 2007 .

She was also the Brand Ambassador for RMKV, the famous wardrobe hub in Chennai. It was reported that her inception had increased the market value of the store. At a given point of time, "Entha Colour", the caption for one of the advertisement, were the buzz words among chennai-ites. After her marriage with the well-acclaimed actor Surya on 11 September 2006, she left the film industry. However she continues to do ad films and some work for TV.

When queried whether Jyothika will return to acting, Suriya says, “It is for her to decide. If she is keen to continue to act, I have no hesitation”.
