Shriya Saran Biography

Shriya is the most happening actresses in Tamil and Telugu. She has acted with almost all the top most heroes in south India. To top it all she is the heroine of Rajanikanth in ‘Shivaji’, the biggest movie made in India.

Shriya Saran was born in Dehradun to Neeraja and Pushpendra. She was brought up in Ranipur, few miles from Haridwar. Her father, Pushpendra Saran worked for the state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited while her mother, Neeraja Saran was a chemistry teacher at the Delhi Public School, which Saran had attended. Her elder brother, Abhiroop Saran is four years older than her and currently works with an advertising firm, FCB Ulka, in Mumbai. He is married to Aarti, who Saran describes her relationship with her "like a house on fire". Shriya is their second child and her elder brother Abhiroop, recently got married and is living in Delhi. She completed her schooling from Delhi Public School. She did her college in Lady Sri Ram College and has got a B.A. degree to her credit. She has been training Kathak and classical dance from her young age and is an accomplished Kathak dancer. She trained dancing under the guidance of Shobha Narayan.

As a kid, Saran claims to have "pooled her pocket money that she was given over a period of time and give it to a blind school". When Shriya was 17, her family moved to Delhi because she was passionate to learn kathak from eminent guru, Shovana Narayan. In 2005, Saran was rumoured to be set to get married to her long term boyfriend, Rajiv Madhavan, which she later denied claiming the pair were "only close friends". However, in late December 2007, it became clear that Saran's relationship with her co-star Jesse Metcalfe has become more romantic. Neither of the pair have reported to the media about the link.

Shriya started her career as a model and which led to lot of advertisements and music albums. Shriya is the brand ambassador for large brands like Brookbond and Red Label Tea. She started her acting career with the Telugu film ‘Ishtam’ (2001). Thought the film didn’t fare well in the box-office, Telugu producers and directors noticed her potential. She got a big offer to act with Nagarjuna in the film ‘Santosham’ (2002), which turned out a major hit. The films that followed ‘Nuvve Nuvve’ and ‘Bhageeratha’ were also big hits. Next she did one of the biggest hits in her career ‘Chatrapati’ opposite Prabhas.

‘Enakku 20 Unakku 18’ (2003) marked her debut in Tamil. She was cast along with Telugu actor Tarun, Trisha Krishnan. Trisha, another top south Indian actress is a good friend of Shriya. The film was an average hit at box-office. Instead of accepting the numerous glamorous roles that came her way from Tamil, she went back to Tollywood where she acted with the top most stars such as Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Mahesh Babu, etc.

In between she did couple of Hindi films ‘Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum’ opposite Arya Babbar and the supernatural thriller ‘Shukriya’ with Aaftab Shivdasani. Both did do well.

She has made her comeback in Kollywood through the film ‘Mazhai’ opposite Jayam Ravi. The movie, which was a remake of a Telugu film with the same title, did well at the box-office. Her biggest achievement is when she bagged the much-coveted role opposite Rajinikanth in ‘Sivaji: The Boss’ directed by Shankar. Her new Hindi film ‘Awaarapan’ with Emraan Hashmi directed by Mohit Suri is in the post-production stage. She will also be doing a Hindi film with director Sangeet Sivan starring Bobby Deol, produced by K.Sera.

She is now acting opposite Bobby Deol in ‘Ek- The Power of one’ , Vikram in ‘Kandasaamy’ and hollywood actor Jesse Metcalfe in "The other End of the line" No other actress has such prestigious films lined up as Shriya has. She is one actress you can really bet is going to go places!

In January 2008, a Hindu organisation based in Chennai lodged a police complaint against Saran, objecting to the outfit worn by her during the 175th day celebration of her film, Sivaji. In a complaint, the Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) alleged that Shriya's outfit had 'offended Hindu culture,'. The complaint was officially taken in by the police and is currently under investigation. Shriya is the fourth actor, after Kushboo, Shilpa Shetty and Reema Sen to face the fire of political parties and organisations in recent times. Shriya then tendered an unconditional apology for “wearing inappropriate skimpy attire”.

Shriya Quotes

"I came to know that the producers are in search of heroines for 'Ishtam' and I gave some of my music videos in which I performed dance to them."

"There will be different kinds of persons in the industry. The behaviour of some individuals will be quite odd. As far as me, I did not face any sour experiences so far and all I faced are good encounters."

"I studied in a co-education school, I have both girl friends as well as boy friends. I am in touch with my friends even now. Generally, I will be quite friendly with everyone. I don't like to remain moody at the shooting spot. I speak to everyone and at the same time work with dedication."

"Destiny decides that a person should marry a person. I just strongly believe it."

"I can speak and understand Telugu very well, though my grammar is not good. People laugh at me when I speak Telugu, so I shy away from it. You know, I don’t want people to make fun of me."

"I was born with a good figure. To tell you the truth, both my mother and I are very conscious about health. In fact, it was my mother who taught me how to stay fit and slim. I never eat sweets or ice screams to remain slim. I also do yoga every morning."

"Shankar called me one fine day and told me that he was impressed by my looks and performance in ‘Mazhai’. I couldn’t believe my ears when he asked me if I want to play Rajnikanth’s heroine in ‘Sivaji’. I said ‘yes’ in no time."

"Rajini sir is the best human being I have seen. He is ever helpful and very patient. He has answer for everything – such is the dept of his knowledge. None of the unit of the film knew about Spain when went there but Rajni sir knows almost everything about the country from customs to its political history. He is the most relaxed, hard working and knowledgeable person I have ever met."

"You know, I weigh 54 kilos. I make sure that I work out in gym for at least 45 minutes a day. To me, fitness matters and not figures."

"I have an egg white omelette, porridge and paratha for breakfast and it is the favorite meal of the day. Plain roti with Dal and Bhindi for lunch is fine. I love Chennai for availability of fresh fish. I love Andhra, Malabar or Goan fish curry but red meat is a complete no. Chicken is avoidable too. I am basically a foodie but I keep away from junk food. Thai cuisine is my personal favorite."
